Seven Tips To Good Table Manners

Whether it’s dinner at a friend’s house or a business meeting over lunch, we judge people based on their table manners. But what can you do if your kids do not behave themselves at the dinner tables? The following are seven tips to set your children on the road to good table manners:

● Look for the good. Instead of pointing out (指出) all the things your children do wrong, point out what they do right. Please say, for example, “I am so proud of you. It was wonderful the way you served yourself.”

● Don’t turn dinner into an unpleasant “lecture time”. That will turn kids off not only manners, but dinner, and you, too.

● Check your own example. Don’t show up for dinner in just your underwear (内衣) unless you want your kids to do the same.

● Don’t always consider your kids lazy and dirty ones. Instead, point out the behavior in a tender way. For example: “It’s a good idea to unfold your napkin, so if food falls you won’t dirty your clothes.”

● Teach your kids good manners in the form of a game. One night a week, try to have a formal dinner. Try dressing up, serve a special meal, and expect more formal manners. That will help improve their sense (意识) of manners.

● Make kids understand part of the tradition. Invite guests over and let kids help serve them. This helps them indirectly learn about table manners.

● Try dining out once in a while. Fast food restaurants aren’t counted. Try a nice restaurant and let kids order their own food, pay the bill and give the tip.

Father’s Day was inspired (激发) by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was an old soldier of the US Civil War and his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was unusual back in those days.

His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realized what her father had done for them. It was in the early 1900s and she was at church one day, listening to a sermon (布道)on Mother’s Day. She thought there should also be a Father’s Day celebration.

And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary (周年纪念日) of Sonora’s father’s death. Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s.

Father’s Day is never quite such the big commercial (商业的) event as Mother’s Day is, probably because it hasn’t been there for so long. But what do British people do for Father’s Day?

Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. Some people do buy presents as well. Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can always use even if they don’t want them.

Some families might do things together to celebrate Father’s Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest — make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car to make him feel really grateful.

38. Why did Sonora Dodd want to have a Father’s Day to honor her father?

A. Because her father was an old soldier.

B. Because her father died too early.

C. Because her father had taken part in the US Civil War.

D. Because her father managed to support the large family.

39. It was June 1(Friday), 2007. Then Father’s Day was on _____.

A. June 3         B. June 8        C. June 10           D. June 17

40. Which of the following are usually done on Father’s Day in Britain?

a. Buy your father little gifts.       b. Buy your father wine and cigarettes.

c. Buy your father a new car.       d. Wash your father’s car.

e. Drive your father for a holiday.   f. Learn how to make tea from your father.

g. Hold a party and dance with your father.

A. a; d          B. b; d                C. a; e; f            D. b; c; g

41. What can we know from the passage?

A. The British have celebrated Father’s Day for more than half a century.

B. Father’s Day has a longer history than Mother’s Day.

C. People spend less money on Father’s Day than on Mother’s Day.

D. People don’t value Father’s Day as much as Mother’s Day.

October 31st is Halloween when children in the UK dress up as ghosts, witches (巫婆) and all kinds of mysterious, wonderful but very scary creatures and go “trick or treating”. They visit their neighbors and show off their costumes and in return are given goodies (糖果).

If children knock on your door on Halloween, you should be ready with treats (usually sweets or chocolate) for them. If you don’t hand over a treat, they might play a trick on you, like saying “Boo!” to try to scare you or play some other kind of harmless tricks.

But the innocence (天真无邪) of Halloween could be on the wane. Police departments around the country say there’s been a sharp rise in anti-social behavior linked to the traditional door-to-door Halloween calls.

In Surrey Chief Inspector Stribblehill said, “The way people celebrate Halloween has been steadily (稳定地) changing over the last few years. I think ‘trick or treating’ has become more aggressive. It used to be pulling a horrible face or something equally harmless, but more and more youngsters are doing things like throwing eggs or flour, and that can be very frightening, particularly for the elderly and the youth.”

This year, however, there’s been a change. A group of teenagers who were “trick or treating” in Bristol noticed a house on fire. They broke in through a window and saw 33-year-old Mike Starr unconscious (失去知觉的) on the floor. They dragged him out and helped him to hospital. One of the boys’ mothers said, “I’m really proud of them all.”

So it seems a kinder, gentler Halloween might be coming for us all from now on.

42. The underlined phrase “on the wane” in the third paragraph most probably means _____.

A. on the way                                    B. on the increase

C. becoming less or weaker                D. becoming more popular

43. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Generally, children and young people celebrate Halloween.

B. Halloween treats are gifts like sweets and chocolate.

C. A group of teenage boys rescued Mike Starr on Halloween.

D. The way children go “trick or treating” has changed suddenly in the last few years.

44. By writing the fifth paragraph, the writer really wanted to _____.

A. say that Mike Starr was in danger when the house was on fire

B. criticize the police for their wrong views towards the children

C. express that the children are likely to have a kinder, gentler Halloween in future

D. show that the parents were proud of the children all the time

45. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The changing face of Halloween          B. Children’s activities for Halloween

C. The origin of Halloween                 D. Different ways to celebrate Halloween
