“A Time I Almost Drowned”

I was swimming in the deepest part of the pool. The water was clear and cool. It was a dozen different shades of blue: azure, turquoise, peacock, cerulean. The pool was indoors, in a huge room with a vast domed ceiling. It was held up by Parthenon-style marble pillars. Between them were glass doors leading to the locker room and the outdoor pool. The handles were painted gold. The place seemed like a place for royalty. At the clean bottom of the pool, there was a mosaic of people swimming. Separating the deep and shallow areas was a line.

Taking a big breath, I dived deep down into the water. Reaching out my fingers, I touched the tiles. I neglected to hold my breath. Quickly letting go of the bottom, I floated up.

Gasping for breath, I emptied my blue-rimmed goggles and readjusted my matching locker key bracelet. That was when everything went wrong.

Pool water closed over my head. Surprised and frightened that I might die, I kicked and thrashed. I floated, managed to take a breath that was more water than air, and then sank.

In the middle of struggling, I realized I needed air. No. I really needed it, but I couldn’t float up enough to get it! Naturally, I started to panic.

Seeing a young stranger clad in a swimming suit, I called for help, losing most of my air. He wore a full-body matt-black swimming suit with sky-blue stripes on the sides. His hair was brownish black.

Noticing me, he jumped. Hazel eyes wide, he mouthed something like, “How on earth did you get there?!” Without stopping for answers, he plunged into the water. He grabbed my arm and shoved me towards the surface. I dragged him down. We were about to sink down to nothing. The bottom had vanished. How could it? I was puzzled.

I pushed him away, and he floated up. The dome looked like a tiny dent, I was so far away.

My vision darkened. Four minutes. Two hundred and forty seconds without oxygen before I died. How long had I been underwater? It didn’t matter. I could never reach the surface. I was doomed.

Desperately, I waved my arms. I could breathe again. The pool was gone. That was so weird!

Suddenly, I woke up. The blankets fell off my face. The pool, the boy and drowning was all just a dream!
