I met Amnon in the elevator, I have met him
a few times in the backyard while walking my dog, he does jogging
sometimes in the morning. I said hello and asked where is he from.
He said Israel. I thought he was Indian, his face is a bit dark,
thin and tight. He wears glasses and gray
hairs.
We chatted some in the lobby.He uses strong
perfume, green roses printed on his white T-shirt close to his
neck. He also lives in this compound for 5 years, he said he never
met me before, I start confusing if he was the same "Indian" man I
met. I told him that I have been to Israel, where
is very "interesting" to me, except this, very difficult for me to
find another word to describe my feeling towards to that land and
the special group of people. He is happy that I know much more than
the most Chinese he met, mostly they know only one place of
Israel--the Dead Sea.
He came to knock my door in 3 minutes. My
dog jumps and "hug" him, he is a bit scared of dog. He prefers
coffee with a lot of suger and milk. With the coffee, he told me
the first page of his story. He served Israel
army for 26 years. He married an Israel lady. One month after the
marriage, she found pregnant; in the 2nd month, she found having
breast cancer, doctor suggested to abolish the baby; in the 3rd
month, she had to do it; in the 4th month and since then, she lived
in hospital. One day, he was asked a question by one of her friend:
why do you marry a woman who got cancer? He was shocked by this
question. The friend told him, his wife checked out cancer for 6
months already. He figured it out that was two months before their
marriage. He said he would not marry her if he knows, the only
reason he marries her because he wants a family with kids. He fight
inside for days, finally he chose to stay with her, he thought it
would be "months" with her, but instead it's 3 years till she
passed away. She never knows that he knew about her
sickness.
He got released. He retired from army, he
got free from the marriage. He traveled the world, while visiting
China, he has been to Guilin, Chengdu, Xi'an, Harbin, at one of the
places he met his current wife. --The story was like this: he took
flight to Harbin to see the Ice Festival, in the airplane, one guy
sat behind him talked to him, and offered him some help during his
stay in Harbin. He really needed his help to change a hotel, as the
one he settled nobody can understand him at all. Then the guy
called another friend of his to help him, afterwards, the friend
invited him to go ski, where they met a rich guy, who invited many
more friends to come having dinner together. Everyone got drunk,
the Chinese rich guy fall down first, and one lady who can speak
some English came over to talk with him, she is a journalist,
writes bio for government people........ she became his 2nd wife
later on: When he stopped by in Beijing for a couple days, the lady
happened in Beijing too to send her daughter off to England, so
they met again for dinner. Another time, she called from London and
asked him to visit her, he was in Israel and free, so why
not.
Can't you say this is not destiny? Life has
been changed for a little thing happens like saying hello to the
person next to you.
He feels reborn in China. He always thinks
about China since he was little. Now he feels that he has so much
to do, he had wasted too much time before. Before, he can presee
his days from Feb to May, as everyday was so routine in army and
his dead marriage. When he looks back, he can not believe he has
lived life like that. But one thing makes it fair, because he
served the army that long, he can get pension all his life, which
is one reason he doesn't have to worry about paying bills, pretty
enough to pay him living in China.
He bought new clothes every week, he opens
the packages with joyous, as gifts he gives to
himself.

A
bit late after dinner time, he comes. Just steps in the door, he
pulls his shirt and explains he has no time to change a clean one,
asks for excuse, of course-- He sits down, running the whole day,
he buys everyone at home gifts, but with a bit
sadness, he says that he could not find a kind of medicine he looks
for his mom. When mention this, he becomes a bit emotional, almost
cries. He says he loves his mom, but could not even find the
medicine. He blames himself. It seems there are quite some stories
between he and his family, maybe keep for next
time.
He
says he is not religious person, but I feel he is very religious.
He thanks me very much for the help, which makes life a lot easier
for him. I help to call a taxi driver Guo Shi fu he uses regularly
to send him to airport in early morning. He has to run to do
packing, he promises to bring me a gift when he gets
back.
