Yang Wanli (11241206) was a poet of the Southern Song dynasty. As one of four most famous poets of that time, he was known for his own poetic style, original expressions and simple but lively rhetorics. Throughout his life, he wrote over twenty thousand poems, only some of which have survived.

In order to produce impressive and lively effects, poets might personify and subjects in their poems from a dragonfly to a willow tree as if they all have lives and feelings. This short poem written by Yang entitled “Small Pond” is a good example.

Not far from a small pond, there was the mouth of a spring which kept a water supply for the pond. The poet noticed that the spring water coming out quietly from the mouth was trickling sluggishly into the pond. He though perhaps the spring mouth cherished its water so much that it was extremely reluctant to release it for the pond.

There were several willow trees by the pond and the shades of the trees were being reflected by the water surface. These charming trees. Wrote the poet, were admiring their own reflections on the water intoxicatedly and it seemed that they enjoyed the pond very much.

The lotus leaves were still young and tender. It seemed, thought the poet, it would still be sometime before he could have blooming lotus flowers. For now, there were just some flower buds in the pond. Perhaps they preferred a fashionable delay, thought Yang. Nevertheless, he spotted a dragonfly already standing playfully on the top of one bud as if it could not help amusing itself with the lotus flowers!
