I wish sb would do sth

 

（1） 基本语义

是个句型，意思是希望在将来什么时候，你会做sth.

I wish I could fly.

I wish I could see him now.

_ 注意以上两句用的是could.

 

I wish I could have my car back. 这是对将来的希望.
I wish I had my car back.  这是对现在的.

 

1. I wish you drove more slowly.

2. I wish you had driven more slowly.

3. I wish you would drive more slowly.

句子1是对现在及将来的陈述；句子2.是对过去的后悔；句子3是抱怨，具有挑衅性

 

（2） 注意陷阱

"当我们谈论我们不喜欢的事以及我们希望当事人或别人改变它，可以用 to wish + “would + do”的结构:

— I wish you wouldn't squeeze the toothpaste from the middle! (= I want you to change your habits.)

— I wish he would stop smoking. (= I don't like it, I want him to change it)

— I wish you wouldn't squeeze the toothpaste from the middle! (= I want you to change your habits.)

WISH + WOULD (I wish my team would score)
这是一个表达目前及最近将来的愿望的结构,这里说话者是不满意的，厌烦的或不耐心的，这个结构不可以用于指自己 (e.g. I wish I would work less ).

 

【例1】

1-I wish I had my own house
2-I wish I would have my own house.

句1对，类比"If pigs had wings, they could fly").

句2错

I wish I could have my own house. ü

I wish I were to have my own house.ü

句2的句式在美国没问题，关键是人称不对

I wish he would stop smoking. (I - he)

这句又对了

 

【例2】

1. I wish she didn't complain about her back.
2. I wish she wouldn't complain about her back.

句子1有两个意思，j希望她背好；k希望她闭嘴，别嚷嚷了

句子2是对她有点烦：干嘛老吵呢，因为她未必真的背痛

 

（3） 两个结构的区别 I wish sb. did sth./ could (would) do sth.

【例1】

-I wish he wouldn't leave his dirty clothes everywhere.
-I wish he didn't leave his dirty clothes everywhere.

句子1要弱化些，表示希望将来不会在那样.
句子2 要严厉些, 是说他老是那样，希望他不要这样了.

 

【例2】

为什么1&2是对的，但3却又是错的

1. I wish he ate more vegetables.
2. I wish he would eat more vegetables.

_ 句子1指平常他的习惯是很少吃蔬菜，反过来就是我希望他能多吃些； 句子2有可能是指这次.
3. I wish he hurried up
4. I wish he would hurry up

_ 句子3错而句子4又对了，可从下面两句的“根源”得到解答：

He eats vegetables.  （可以说平时总吃蔬菜）
He hurries up.       （这个不能说平时，它只能指某次）

有些动词指平常的习惯，那它们就可以用于这种结构： "I wish he <past simple form> ..."
He ate vegetables.
I wish he ate vegetables.
He hurried up.
I wish he hurried up.

 

I wish this car went faster. (车现在的一般情况)
I wish this car would go faster. (车的将来表现)

Hurry up表将来没问题，但不能表示一般状况

 

【例3】

I wish he ate the meat.
这句没有意思，可以用下面各句表达相应的意思

a) I wish he had eaten the meat. (In fact he didn't and I'm repenting that he couldn't).
b) I wish he would eat the meat.( In fact he is not going/willing to eat the meat and I want him to eat that).
c) I wish he could eat the meat.(In fact I know he can't or is not supposed to eat yet I want him to eat that).

 

【例4】

1. I wish he didn't draw on the wall.
2. I wish he wouldn't draw on the wall.

两者都画涂墙了.
句子1指他个性，别人真无奈，妈妈可以用这话说他儿子；

句子2指某次行为，可以阻止他的

 

（4） 两个结构的区别 I wish sb. had done sth./ could (would) have done sth.

 

【例1】

I wish you would have been.
I wish you had been

两者意思一样，前者多用于美国，英国很少用, 而且很多人认为是错误的结构

"You'll wish you had died as a child."ü （英美）
"You'll wish you would have died as a child." （英国错，美国对）

I wish I had learnt English better. ü（英美）

I wish I would have learnt English better  （英国错，美国对）

 

（5） 提高题

 

【例1】

1. I wish you would come to see me more often ü

2. I wish my car would be as fast as yours. O
3. I wish my car were as fast as yours. ü

4. I wish my car went as fast as yours. ü

5. I wish my car would go as fast as yours. ü

车的特征总具有固定性，不是说现在是A，将来又是B，所以句子2不对。

但要是指将要买的新车，恐怕未必错误。（存疑吧）

 

【例2】

1. I wish I could see him during my stay in Warwick.
2. I wish I saw him during my stay in Warwick.
3. I wish I was/were seeing (=visiting) him during my stay in Warwick.

句2其实没什么意思，要改为I wish I had seen him;

_ 以上两例，都说明不要死套公式

【例3】判断正误

1. I wish people asked me before they borrow my clothes.
2. I wish people would ask me before they borrow my clothes.
3. I wish I saw her.
4. I wish I would see her.

答：

1. I wish people asked me before they borrow my clothes.
2. I wish people would ask me before they borrow my clothes.
3. I wish I saw her.
4. I wish I would see her.

A. I wish people asked me before they borrowed my clothes - general principle.
B. I wish people would ask me before they borrowed my clothes - general principle; means the same as A.
C. I wish you had asked me before you borrowed my clothes - single occasion.

句子3形式正确，实际不对，应该为： I wish I had seen him;

句子4的“I”不对，或would不对

I wish he would see her.

I wish I could see her.

【例4】判断正误

I wish I won the lottery.

这句有可能被误读为指现在一般，那就错了；但如果指将来则没有问题。总体，这个句子是对的

 

【例5】

1. We wish you wouldn't drive so fast

这句是直接要求司机减速，意思类似的句子有

I wish you wouldn't smoke inside the house

I wish he would stop chewing that gum".
2. We wish you didn't drive so fast

是对不可能的情况的理想化愿望，类似意思有

I wish I didn't have to go to work

I wish I had an unlimited supply of chocolate
当然，这句听起来也有点好笑，因为“not driving so fast”并不是很难实现的事情，这个司机就算超级顽固，但减速这事情本身却是很简单
1. We wish you didn't drive so fast = I don’t like your driving.
2. We wish you wouldn't drive so fast = please slow down!

 

其它例子：
