Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2000 Brut Champagne (750ml)

65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay

Tasted in early August, 2014

Served upon uncorking.

Alluring golden robe. Enchanting scents of sandalwood incense greet the nose first, soon joined by ripe tones of apricot & pear, as well as a light touch of tobacco. The refinement & sophistication of the bouquet naturally raise high expectations of the taste.

Just a sip, and smiles on our faces. So lush, silky, seamless & long. Tons of chocolate, toffee & coffee, spiced by sandalwood incense, tobacco & saline minerality. The higher alcohol content (13%), typical of Clos des Goisses, is more than well balanced by the almost chewable richness of flavor extracts. And despite all the richness, it remains well shaped and poised, finishing with fragrant nuances of saline minerality.

While it surely can be kept for a few more years, I see no reason to hold this any longer and would rather enjoy all its lushness now, with its shape & poise still intact.
