Deutz Cuvee William Deutz Brut Rose Millesime 1996 (750ml)

Rose d’Assemblage: 25% Chardonnay; 75% Pinot Noir, including around 7% Rouge.

Tasted in end July, 2013

First served upon uncorking.

Very pale salmon-orange hue. A smattering of pinpoint bubbles.

Although Chardonnay is minority here, it pervades the nose & palate with grand oiliness & underlying depth of candied citrus. Not well chilled yet, it feels a bit unctuous, so we continue to chill the bottle with champagne stopper on, seeking more finesse & detail after well chilled.

After about 15 minutes, we served the 2^nd round. Now the oiliness is gone, instead we are welcomed by exquisite fragrance of clean summer fruits with mineral finesse. The palate echoes the nose with sleek texture, subtle nuance & classy purity.

With more aeration, it really comes to itself some 30 minutes after uncorking. The bouquet exudes intriguing undergrowth aromas, reminiscent of fine Bourgogne Rouge, enhanced by a touch of sandalwood incense. The Grand Pinot also asserts itself now on the taste buds with bold expression of naturally sweet fruit, seasoned by spice & saline minerality. Impressive length with lingering inner perfume. And the lively acidity keeps it vibrant & lifted. 

Do not be fooled by its pale color. Give it time, and you will be rewarded with not only elegance & refinement, but also nuanced complexity & underlying power, with impeccable finesse.
