or not, or to what degree these key stages and points relate to
SLA:
1. Content should include a brief mention of
innatist and cognitivist theories
2. Certain SLA factors are not found in FLA:
socio-cultural, strategic and affective factors. e.g. Note:
Parellel structure is better than FLA than SLA than comparison
3. Conclude by deciding
whether or not FLA has little to tell us about SLA
4. take a comparative approach: identify key
stages and points relating to FLA, such as type of input, order of
acquisition, hypothesis testing and error types, critical
period
* topic 2
1. define the ted communicative competence:
cc = competence + performance = combination of formal correctness
and use-related capabilities
2. identify the key areas that need to be
developed to achieve communicative competence: refer to sources
such as Canale and Swain, Hymes and Bachman, including
consideration of their models
3. conclude by considering whether or the
case for performance is supported/ not supported by the fact that
most learner of L2 are not motivated primarily by a desire to
communicate with native speakers of L2
* topic 3
1. define and explain the term inter language
by discussing stages of learning and the potential for learners to
fossilise at particular stages refer to sources such as Elllis,
Gass, Selinker and Tarone
2. present mini-samples of your students'
written work that appear to present evidence of the existence of
interlanguage stages e.g. fossilised items:
consider in the discussion whether or not the sales reflect both
inter- and intralingual errors.
3. conclude by suggesting teaching strategies
that might help to prevent fossilisation and so keep developing
speakers' interlanguage

The socio-cultural factor is a variable that should be
considered by teachers in both SLA and FLA. The cultural background
of the learner dictates how they acquire information from the
external world and how they are involved in language acquisition.
Vygotsky’s social-cultural theory, for instance, suggests that
social interaction is an effective way for children to acquire a
language. Vygotsky also introduced a concept known as the Ozone of
Proximal Development, in which teachers play an important role in
individual learns’ ability to accomplish learning tasks. In some
cultures, teachers may provide instruction directly and this is a
teacher-centred approach. But in other cultures, the approach is
student-oriented and teachers work as assistants. This difference
may be explained by cultural factors.
