Frank Gehry 住宅, 2009年1月1日 Santa Monica

Frank Gehry's House has been in some architecture textbooks for a
while. As labeled one of the first post-modernism designs, the
house was famous, anyway. I viewed the pictures of outside for a
few times and just could not figure out why it is great. So, as the
first day of 2009, I came to see it, in person.
Before I continue, I like to say that I am not that in Gehry's design. I visited Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles, and of course, for most of his works, I viewed in books or online. Last year, I wrote a short unfinished article on Disney Hall and criticized the building. End of last year, Gehry's work for Seattle music hall was named one of the 10 most ugly arhchitecture in the world. I think so too, but again, without finally seeing it myself, I'd like not to finalize my opinion. What I like to say here is, I am ONLY into a piece of work, I don't care who created it, whether you are Gehry or Harry.
The Gehry House is located at the crossing of 22nd st and Washington St. of Santa Monica, California. It is around 1 mile away from the Pacific Ocean. The neighborhood, is clearly former middle class layout, planning is in traditional north-south, east-west axis. Trees are bid and old, which I view as good sign of good estate lot. Surely, for right now, most houses here are over $1M.
Before I continue, let me show you some pictues of the north elvevation of the house as I jumped out of my car and make the pictures. Jan 1, I took a camera with me, but battery was dead, so I shot picture with my iPhone instead. Picture quality is OK but not good, at least, this is my copyright stuff and I don't have to worry about anything.

My first impression was, this house is beautiful. And this house used so many so so materials and created a harmony, which many architecture with the lable of decompolism lack. You can see thru the glass and look at the wood frame and the main body of the house, the old one before 1978. What a renovation!
OK, I have to admit, this is the first time that a so call "renovation" with sort of philosophy that strikes me. It is qiet, it is there and it is like a sculture.
More, from outside, you see a huge cluster of catus in the westside inner patio. The catus is very unique in this neighborhood. I think the plant speaks for the building and the owner as well.
Then you walk around the corner to the east front of the house. Plants are carefully laid out and block the view of the public, (at least for auto traffic, not for pedestrian) thus creates the privacy of space for the house in this direction. The entrance doorway is in this side, I took a picture of the mailbox. At that moment, I did not like to push the doorbell as I don't want to interupt the people inside, if Gehry was in, so what? We like to appreciate the good eggs and we don't actually need to see the hen.

Like my other articles, I end it here and will come back edit. Time for dinner, not eat, but making.
