When Kong Rong Was Four Years' Old...

Once upon a time, there lived a great person in China. His name was Confucius. One day, Confucius went out to see a friend Mr. Lin far away in the mountains. Mr. Lin was a farmer, who owned some pear trees in one of the fields. Mr. Lin gave some pears to Confucius as a present for his grandchildren.

When Confucius got home, he summoned all the children to the living room and everybody sat quietly on the carpet, waiting for Confucius to talk.

"Children, it is so good to see you all again! Have you all behaved yourselves while I was away?" asked Confucius.

"Yes! We have." all the children replied.

"Great! I have some presents for you. The friend I was visiting, Mr. Lin has asked me to bring you some pears. I want you to queue up in a straight line, the youngest at the front and the eldest at the back. You can all, one by one, come up and take one pear each." explained Confucius.

Kong Rong was the youngest child, so he stood in front of the queue. He smiled when he walked up and said:

"Thank you, Grandpa Confucius!" and chose his pear, but Kong Rong took the smallest pear from the tray, and retreated.

Confucius was surprised to see what had happened, and he called Kong Rong and asked,

"My child, you are the youngest one here, and you were the first to go up. Why didn't you take a bigger pear?"

"I am the youngest, so I ought to take the smallest one. I think it is only right that older people, like my brothers, should have bigger pears." replied Kong Rong. Confucius was very impressed with such grown up words that Kong Rong had said.

For such a small child, Kong Rong had extremely good manners. He always thought about other people before himself.

Many years later, Kong Rong became a great teacher in China and nowadays, people, like you and I can still remember his name.
