Megaplier

Most states offer a Megaplier feature to increase non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times; it costs an additional $1 per play. Before each Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday and Friday nights, the Megaplier is drawn. From a pool of 15 balls, five are marked with 2X, six with 3X, three with 4X and one with 5X. This mix results in the following odds for each of the Megaplier numbers and their associated prize values:

One ticket sold in South Carolina matched all six numbers in the Mega Millions lottery drawing for a total jackpot of $1.537 billion on Oct. 24. (Reuters)

Somebody, somewhere in South Carolina, is going to look at their bank balance today and think: Well, that escalated quickly.

Lottery officials said early Wednesday that a single ticket purchased in South Carolina won the massive $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot.

No additional details were immediately available, but it’s possible the winner’s identity may never be known: South Carolina is one of just a handful of states that allows lottery jackpot winners to remain anonymous.

The winning numbers were 5-28-62-65-70, with a Mega Ball number of 5, and lottery officials estimated that 75 percent of all number combinations had been purchased by the time of Tuesday night’s drawing.

The estimated cash option for the second-largest grand prize in U.S. lottery history — should the winner choose to take a one-time lump-sum payment instead of annual payouts over 30 years — is $878 million, according to Mega Millions officials.

Lottery officials had said for days that the jackpot would be worth an estimated $1.6 billion, a U.S. lottery record. But when the jackpot was finalized, it was downgraded to $1.537 billion.

The U.S. lottery record remains $1.586 billion, for a Powerball jackpot shared by three winning tickets in January 2016.

“The moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Gordon Medenica, lead director of the Mega Millions Group and Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming. “This is truly a historic occasion. We’re so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can’t wait to meet the lucky ticket holder.”

Lottery fever struck nationwide ahead of Tuesday’s drawing, with jackpot chasers waiting in long lines for tickets. Virginia Lottery officials said as many as 12,700 tickets were being sold per minute at the sales peak in that state.

Mega Millions officials count on enormous jackpots to draw in players who would ordinarily avoid participating. Last October, those officials made two big changes: They doubled ticket prices to $2 — and tweaked the formula to make it easier to win smaller prizes but harder to win the jackpot.

Powerball announced that a single ticket sold at a convenience store in Chicopee, Mass., was the winner of the Aug. 23 $758.7 million jackpot. Here’s how winning the lottery has brought more than a windfall for some. (Taylor Turner/The Washington Post)

Here’s how Mega Millions used to work: Players picked five numbers from 1 to 75 and a Mega number from 1 to 15. The odds of winning the top prize were 1 in 258,890,850.

Since Mega Millions modified the formula, players now pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega number of 1 to 25. The odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 302,575,350.

In other words, reducing the number of balls for the first five numbers increases the chances of winning a smaller prize. But raising the number of Mega Balls makes it harder to win the jackpot. (You still win the big jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in a drawing.)

Powerball made similar changes to its rules in 2015. That game itself currently has a monster jackpot, though a small one relative to Mega Millions: Powerball stands at $620 million ahead of Wednesday’s drawing.

Mega Millions reported that Friday’s prize would be a paltry $40 million.

Winning $1.6 billion Mega Millions ticket sold in South Carolina

Lottery officials say someone has won the record $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot.

The jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

The winner beat odds of 1 in 302 million.

Lottery officials say someone who bought a ticket in South Carolina has won the record $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot. The prize has become the world's largest ever lottery win.

The game organizers confirmed that a ticket purchased in the state has matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's draw. The winning numbers were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5. The odds of picking all six correct numbers are 1 in 302 million.

The identity of the winner or the exact location of where the ticket was bought from has not yet been revealed.

"The moment we've been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited," said Gordon Medenica, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Group in a statement. "We're so happy for the winner or winners, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can't wait to meet them," he added.

Mega Millions officials said the winners will have a choice between an estimated annuity value of $1.537 billion, paid in one immediate payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments, or the cash option of an estimated $877.8 million.

Whether the winner takes the jackpot as a lump sum or as an annuity spread out over three decades, the win will be reduced by a tax withholding of 24 per cent. The winner will likely be liable to pay the top income tax rate for individuals and, if applicable, will also be subject to state taxes.

According to CNBC calculations, the final cash prize could be reduced by as much as 45 percent, depending on where you purchased the ticket and where you live.

The jackpot has been swelling since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

The previous all-time biggest win was drawn on Jan. 13, 2016, when three winning tickets shared $1.586 billion in the Powerball lottery. The previous largest single ticket win that was not shared out was by Mavis L. Wanczyk of Chicopee, Massachusetts. She claimed the winning ticket for the $758.7 million Powerball jackpot in August of 2017.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

(CNN) Hate to break it to you, but you're not the nation's newest millionaire -- unless you're the lone person in South Carolina who picked the magic Mega Millions numbers to win the $1.537 billion jackpot.

Should the unidentified winner pick a one-time cash option, they would walk away with a cool $878 million. Otherwise, the full $1.537 billion jackpot would be paid in annuities over 29 years.

The numbers drawn Tuesday night were 5, 28, 62, 65 and 70, and the Mega Ball was 5. Only one person matched all the numbers to win the jackpot, Mega Millions said. A whopping 36 tickets nationwide matched five of the six numbers for second-prize tickets.

The jackpot fell just short of the all-time US lottery record, set in January 2016 when three winning Powerball tickets split a $1.586 billion prize. Mega Millions officials had earlier estimated that Tuesday night's prize would reach $1.6 billion, but the total wasn't finalized until after sales stopped shortly before the drawing.

Still, the prize smashes the old Mega Millions record jackpot of $656 million, set in March 2012.

"This is truly a historic occasion. We're so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can't wait to meet the lucky ticket holder," said Gordon Medenica, lead director of the Mega Millions group.

We're not saying you shouldn't play, but here are 5 things more likely to happen than you winning the lottery

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the US Virgin Islands. A ticket costs $2 -- and the winner beat the odds of 1 in 302 million.

The jackpot has been rolling since July 24, when a California office pool of 11 co-workers shared a $543 million prize.

The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday, and the jackpot will reset itself to $40 million -- or $22.8 million cash.
