All lottery sales are for the year ended December 31, 2014 except where noted. If 2014 sales were not available at presstime, the editors relied on the previous submissions from the lottery organization. The column marked “Year” reflects the time period for each lottery organization’s sales.
Sales for all product categories except toto (sports games) and instant (scratch) declined in calendar 2014 over the previous year. The main culprit was a weakened currency in Europe. The euro was selling at US$1.21 as of December 31, 2014, compared to US$1.38 as of December 31, 2013.
For the seventh straight year, there has been only single-digit growth for traditional global lottery sales.
With lotto jackpots reaching stratosphere levels, Lotto remains the undisputed champion as the world’s favorite lottery game. Multi-jurisdictional lotto games are thriving around the world. In 2014, combined lotto and spiel sales totaled $117 billion. Lotto accounts for 41.2% of total worldwide sales.
Combined instant/pulltab sales topped $79.3 billion, up from $78.8 billion in 2013. Instant tickets constitute 27.9% of total worldwide sales.
VLT net machine income totaled $29.6 billion. The continent of Europe leads with $15.3 billion in VLT net income, followed by North America ($8.1 billion). China Welfare Lottery’s VLT net machine income totaled $6.1 billion.
Passive (draw) sales totaled $19.7 billion in 2014, a 8% decline over 2013.
Numbers sales amounted to

Toto sales (which includes fixed odds betting), topped $20.6 billion, an 9% increase over 2012.

In 2014, China Sports Lottery ranked number one in total traditional sales at $28.7 billion. China Welfare Lottery ranked second at $27.3 billion. Lottomatica ranked third at $22.8 billion. La Francaise des Jeux ranked fourth at $15.8 billion. SELAE in Spain ranked fifth at $12.2 billion.
In 2014, Singapore Pools ranked first in total per capita sales at $1,019. Massachusetts Lottery ranked second at $730. OPAP ranked third at $474. Veikkaus Oy ranked fourth at $452. Georgia Lottery ranked fifth at $404.
