Police arrested 12 people in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, during a raid on a house from which a sophisticated illegal lottery operation was being run.

Local media reported that police officers raided the house in the evening and seized fax machines, printing materials and stacks of lottery tickets.

“Undercover officers watched them for more than a week before moving in on them yesterday,” commune police chief Sok Sophal told The Cambodia Daily, adding that the lottery operation had been thriving across the city.

Bun Sathya, chief of the city’s minor crimes bureau, told the Daily that all of the suspects were Cambodian nationals and that half were women.

“We arrested them because they were operating an illegal lottery that we knew about from over a month of investigating the case,” he said, adding that the 12 were still being questioned at the municipal police headquarters.
