New Mexico Lottery: N.M. Lottery announces CEO finalists

The New Mexico Lottery has announced four finalists for the chief executive officer's position, which became vacant in November the lottery's board of directors fired former CEO Tom Romero without explanation.

Romero, who had been with the lottery since its inception in 1996, had an annual salary of $165,000.

The seven-member, governor-appointed board will interview the finalists on Friday, said lottery spokeswoman Linda Hamlin.

The finalists include the lottery's interim CEO, David M. Barden, who came under fire for questionable travel and time out of the office while he was with the Arkansas lottery. Barden attributed the controversy to the Arkansas lottery not having needed policies and procedures in place at the time, and resigned from that lottery in the fall of 2011. Barden helped launch the South Carolina and Arkansas lotteries.

When Barden was named interim CEO last December,New Mexico Lottery board chairman Dan Salzwedel said questions about his travel and absences in Arkansas had been resolved to the satisfaction of the board.

The other finalists are:

John A. Martin, assistant director-lottery for the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency; Tom Trella, director-portfolio strategy and analysis for the Connecticut Lottery; and Dale McDonnell, a Cerrillos, N.M.-based industry consultant and former assistant director and general counsel for the Minnesota State Lottery.

Lottery hires interim CEO

The New Mexico Lottery board of directors voted to hire David M. Barden as an interim CEO for the agency.

Barden, who helped launch the Arkansas and South Carolina lotteries, is expected to begin his assignment in Albuquerque later this month.

The board last month terminated its contract with CEO Tom Romero, but has given no reason for taking that action. Barden served as vice president of the Arkansas Lottery Commission between 2009 and 2011 and as senior attorney and then director of marketing and product development for the South Carolina Education Lottery from 2001 to 2009.

“The New Mexico Lottery and the Legislative Lottery Scholarship program have much to gain by working with Mr. Barden over the next few weeks,” Dan Salzwedel, chairman of the lottery’s board of directors, said in a statement. “The depth of his industry knowledge and his commitment to responsible marketing and sales practices will help position the lottery to be even more successful.”

Barden will be paid $2,500 a week.

The board also voted to begin a search for a permanent CEO with the application period scheduled to end Jan. 15.
