The global market for medical equipment and supplies is valued at US$245.6 billion in 2010。

The 472-page La Fleur’s 2011 World Lottery Almanac is the complete reference source on the $245.6 billion worldwide lottery industry. Section I features a “Fast Facts” compilation of data on North American lotteries, including startup history, guide to product mix, government profits earmarking, lotto matrices, worldwide lotto matrices, top lotto jackpots and video lottery terminal guide. Section II features four-page profiles on 45 U.S., five Canadian and six Australasian lotteries. Each profile traces the lottery’s calendar 2010 versus 2009 sales by game (instant, 3-digit, 4-digit, lotto, cash lotto, keno, VLTs, niche games), its calendar 2010, 2009 and 2008  instant sales by price point ($1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $7, $10, $20) and its projected fiscal 2011 versus fiscal 2010 ad budgets by media and by game. Each profile tracks the lottery’s five-year annual sales by game from fiscal 2006 through fiscal 2010. Each profile features the number and the percentage of total, instant and online retailers by type of business, plus each retailer’s fiscal 2010 total, instant and online sales. Section III is divided into seven chapters: worldwide lottery sales; fiscal 2010 sales, profit and expense analysis; the retailer network; ad expenditures; historical analysis; contractor survey; and calendar 2010 U.S. lotteries’ weekly sales by game. The worldwide lottery sales chapter tracks calendar 2010 game sales in local currency and converted to U.S. currency for approximately 178 lotteries worldwide, including rankings by total and per capita sales for instant, lotto, total, keno, toto and draw games. There is a separate section on VLT net machine income rankings. The historical analysis section features the U.S., Canadian and Australian lotteries’ annual sales by year for the past decade for instant, pulltab, 3-digit numbers, 4-digit numbers, in-state and bloc lotto, keno and video lottery terminals. The contractor guide features a monetary guide to U.S. lotteries’ instant ticket and online system contracts. In addition, there is a worldwide guide to instant printers, online system and VLT vendors’ contracts by lottery organization. The appendix includes a glossary of terms, lottery address directory and supplier directory.

Global lottery sales were up 6.3% in 2010, as compared to global lottery sales in 2009. The growth in worldwide sales was driven by the Latin American market, which recorded consistent double-digit growth across each quarter of 2010, and the Asia Pacific market, which witnessed similarly strong growth across each 2010 quarter. Sales across the second half of 2010 were stronger than sales across the first half of 2010, particularly in the North American market, which augurs well for stronger sales of lottery products in 2011.

As indicated above, strong performances in the emerging markets of Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Africa underpinned worldwide lottery sales across 2010. Participating Latin American lotteries witnessed an aggregate full year on full year increase in sales of 21.8%. They outpaced the participating African lotteries, which saw an aggregate full year on full year increase in sales of 19.4%. Participating Asia Pacific lotteries also performed strongly in 2010 as compared to 2009, with aggregate full year on full year growth of 12.5%. In contrast, lottery sales in Europe and North America continued to remain relatively flat across 2010. Growth in Europe was particularly sluggish, with an aggregate full year on full year increase in sales of just 0.2%. Participating North American lotteries fared slightly better, with an aggregate full year on full year increase in sales of 1.9%. The upturn in North American sales can be attributed to an increase in fourth quarter 2010 sales of 9.0%, compared to sales in the third quarter of 2010.

For third quarter results, see here.

This edition of the WLA Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator sees the addition of a new European lottery, La Loterie Romande, to the list of participating lotteries. This brings the total number of lotteries included in the Indicator to 26. Collectively, the participating lotteries now cover approximately 50% of global lottery sales. The WLA would again like to thank all WLA member lotteries participating in the Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator initiative. We look forward to bringing you the final year results for 2010 in early 2011.
