State Audit: Recession Hinders Results of Lottery Ad Increase

MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - A state audit says the recession makes it
hard to tell if an increase in the Wisconsin Lottery’s advertising budget was really worth it.
Lawmakers voted in 2006 to increase the lottery’s ad spending from
$4.6 million a year to about $7.5 million.

The lottery said the increase would bring in an extra $15 million a
year in ticket revenues. The Legislative Audit Bureau said the big
increase never occurred, but the economic downturn might have had
something to do with it. Lottery ticket sales dropped by 4 percent
in the year ending last June 30th – and considering the recession,
lottery officials said they were pleased that the drop was only
that much.
