Getting along with your teachers 和老师相处

Your history teacher wear clothes from 1974 and always mispronounces your name. Your English teacher loves to start off classes with quizzes. Real people? No way, you think, they are probably droning robots who laugh madly at the thought of giving you heavy homework.

You may be surprised to learn that those givers-of-grades you face every day are real people first. They eat French fries, watch movies, and enjoy sports on the weekends, just like you. Teaching for them, like being a student for you, is just a job they do 8 hours or more a day.

Even if you don’t like one another, a good working relationship between teacher and student is important. Most common problems can be solved with a little effort and communication.

The most common problems are that you don’t like the subject or that you don’t like the teacher. There are two facts here you might want to consider:

Knowledge is never wasted. You’d be surprised when knowing where Rwanda is may come in handy. A subject you don’t enjoy isn’t going to go away. Besides, these classes are not just independent tasks but stepping –stones toward a larger goal, like graduation or college.

You aren’t going to like everyone all the time. There are great teachers in the world, and just like every other profession, there are some who are, um, less than great.

If you were speaking in front of a group and people were chatting and passing notes, how would that make you feel? Good manners and respect is the basis of any relationship. You don’t have to like your teacher or agree with what he or she says, but it is necessary to be polite.

Second, remember that teachers are people, too. Help them out where you can. Young or new teachers may lack experience, and a little feedback from you could be helpful. Just like personal problems can sometimes slow you down, the same is true of your teachers. Job stress, family issues, or health problems are all factors that can affect a teacher’s performance, leaving him or her bad-tempered, unable to concentrate, or unable to complete assignments.

What Should You Do if You Don’t Get Along With a Teacher?

Before you try to get out of a class to escape a teacher you don’t like, there are a few things you can try to make your relationship with your teacher work:

在你试图用逃课的方式来逃避你不喜欢的老师之前，有几件事你可以尝试一下来来改善你和老师的关系：

Ask yourself, “What can I learn form this teacher?” Even if you don’t like his or her personality or lectures, dig deep until you find a subject in which he or she is very knowledgeable. Focus on that part of the teacher’s personality, and use him or her as a tool for learning. Not only will you gain more knowledge in that subject, but a closer relationship with your teacher may help you understand one another better.

问问你自己，“我能从这个老师这里学到什么？”即便你不喜欢他或她的个性或授课，深深挖掘一下直到你找到他或她知识丰富的一个学科。专注于这个老师的这方面的品格，把他或她看作获取知识的工具。这样你不仅会得到更多的本学科的知识，而且你和老师更亲密的关系会帮你们更好了解对方。

Talk to students who are doing well in the class and ask them for tips, tools and a plan of action to get along with the teacher better. If you are too shy to talk to another student, study his actions and behavior in the class room and try to follow his lead.

和班上做的好的同学谈谈心，问他们用怎样的技巧、方法、行动计划来和老师相处得更好。如果你太害羞而不想跟同学谈心，那就研究一下他在教室里的行为举止吧，效仿一下他。

Meet with the teacher and try to communicate what you are feeling. Tell him or what’s on your mind, using statements such as, “It embarrasses me in class when…” or “I can’t learn in class when you…” see if you can work it out between the two of you.

跟老师见个面，试着和他交流一下你的感受。告诉他或她你脑子里想的是什么，可以这样叙述, “ 当。。。。。。时，我在课上感到很尴尬。”

或者“当您。。。。。。时，我在课上学不进去。” 看看是否能够解决你俩的问题。

If your relationship problems can be solved, you’ll find your teacher is not always serious, strict and cold, but a little lovely and easy-going.

如果能够解决你们的关系问题，你就会发现你的老师并不总是那么严肃、那么严格、那么冷漠，还有那么点儿可爱和随和。
