《I F--》      By Rudyard Kipling  《如果》  吉卜林

If you can keep your head when all about you,

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

如果你能镇定自如,当众人失去理性而指责你的时候;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too,

如果你能自信如常,当众人猜忌而你不去枉加辩论的时候;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

如果你能耐心等待而不急不燥, 或遭人诽谤却不以牙还牙; 或遭人嫉恨却不以恶报恶; 既不伪善谄媚,亦不花言巧语;

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,

If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;

如果你能敢于梦想,又不沉迷梦想; 如果你能善于思考,又不走火入魔;

If you can meet with umph and Disaster,

And treat those two impostors just the same;

如果你能坦然面对胜利与灾难,对虚渺的胜负荣辱胸怀旷荡;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken,

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

如果你能忍受听到你说出的真相,被恶棍扭曲用来蒙骗傻瓜,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

或者看到你生活的大厦崩塌,俯下身继续用破烂的工具修补;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings,

And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings,

And never breath a word about your loss;

如果你能抛弃赢来的积蓄,为了下一次,甘愿冒险,面临失去,从新开始,绝不提起从前的损失;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew,

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you,

 Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

如果人们早已离你而去,你仍能坚守阵地奋力前进,身上已一无所有,唯存意志在高喊“顶住”。

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

 Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,

如果你跟平民交谈而不变谦恭之态,亦或与王侯散步而不露谄媚之颜;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

 If all men count with you, but none too much,

如果你让敌人和朋友都无法伤害你,如果你与任何人为伍却能卓然独立;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute,

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

如果你能充实每一分钟,如同秒针60次不后悔的跳动;

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
