Golf Design will look and play like
•
This section will continue to develop as I have time.
Example #1 - Using Large Lateral Movement in Open Space
The Situation:
情况:
•
the single toughest setting is flat open land with no natural
features
http://s3/middle/506116c1x8ee65c7455e2&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
情况:
•
the key to a wide open site is scale
•
the fairways must swing laterally 50% more than a tree lined hole
in order to fill the wide open space
•
the bunkering must be on a large enough scale to compete with the
wide open space
•
the fairways should be wider to match the increase in scale of all
other features
•
the playing corridors should be wider to accommodate the additional
wind
•
avoid unnatural looking containment mounds - used by most
architects - by instead raising the tee, fairway and greens to have
them stand out from the surroundings
Example #2 - Interior Bunkering makes Better Fairway
Bunkering
The Situation:
情况:
•
you want to keep the width for playability but enough challenge for
the best players
http://s9/middle/506116c1x8ee65c92ed28&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
方法:
•
an interior bunker can tighten the landing area without taking away
the total playing width
•
weaker players look at the room between tree lines or the room
between rough as their effective target
•
a good player is forced to flirt with the interior bunker for
position or play well away
•
a weaker players will aim at a central bunker having confidence in
their ability to not hit the ball where they aim, with the full
knowledge that the fairway is much wider than normal
•
this is a great solution to open windy sites where the wind will
make the game borderline unfair on some days of the year
•
how many other ideas provide confidence for a weaker player and
challenge for a strong player
Example #3 - Alternate Routes but Never Separate Fairways
The Situation:
情况:
•
when you want the player to make a choice from the tee
http://s6/middle/506116c1x8ee65ca21875&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
•
rather than two separate fairways, which rarely work, adding a key
interior bunker can often dictate the need to make a choice from
the tee
•
the aggressive route should be a much tighter target but provide a
clear advantage from achieving the shot
•
the safe route should be much easier to achieve, but leave a far
more complicated approach to the green
•
the key bunkers must be penal enough to make reaching the green
only possible through an outstanding shot and nothing less, then
the risk and reward scenario brings the need for the player to make
a decision
•
the use of the interior bunker creates playability and width from
the tee for a weaker player. They only need to avoid the central
bunker, usually by aiming straight at it!
Example #4 - There will always be a Short and Dangerous
Three
The Situation:
情形:
•
provide all players with a realistic opportunity to make a birdie
with one great swing
http://s11/middle/506116c1x8ee65cb1793a&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
•
no hole is anticipated or appreciated more than a short par three,
it is evveryones favourite hole type
•
the expert and duffer stand equally on the tee thinking of one
perfect swing an a certain birdie....or better!
•
the best short three present an inviting target but are surrounded
by disaster
•
the great ones tell you that if you miss you will have a hard time
recovering for par.
Example #5 - Contoured Greens
The Situation:
情形:
•
how do you add difficulty without adding excessive length
http://s13/middle/506116c1x8ee65ccfeaec&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
•
nothing adds more difficulty than a complicated set of green
contours
•
great contours require pin point accuracy to score
•
they add a great deal of thinking to approach shots, chipping and
putting
•
they dictate positional play regardless of the bunkering scheme
•
great golf design is found in the small contours, not the big
ones
Example #6 - Deep Bunkers that have a Purpose
The Situation:
情形:
•
Bunkers are the key technique used in creating strategy, bunker
depth is the most important factor to whether that strategy works
or doesn't.
http://s12/middle/506116c1x8ee65cdf3d8b&690&690Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" TITLE="Design Sketches (in development) 设计草图(深化中" />
The Solution:
•
if you think about the ramifications of ending up in a particular
bunker before you hit a shot, the bunker has great psychological
value
•
the recovery shot from a bunker is what defines the punishment
which in turn defines the value of the hazard
•
If the bunker is very deep, and the possibility exists of losing
more than one shot, the player will tend to play further away to
lessen the risk.
•
if the bunker defends the ideal place to be and must be flirted
with to gain the ideal position then it has great strategic
value
•
if a player finds themselves constantly flirting with the bunker
until he finally hits it in, only to play well away the next round,
and then over time begin to flirt closer and closer until he hits
it in once more - then you have a perfect bunker
•
you see there is nothing more thrilling or appealing than skirting
over an impressive or fearsome hazard, but its only a thrill when
you know the certain disaster that you just avoided.
