Teens and preteens who start the school day really early tend to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That's the finding of a new study of nearly 30. 000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18. These data are the latest evidence that starting school too early can harm health.

“We know from earlier studies that when school starts too early, kids can't get the sleep they need," says Genevieve Gariepy. She works at Mcgill University in Montreal, Canada. Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be over-weight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. They also are at higher risk of feeling depressed, using alcohol or drugs and getting in car accidents.

As an epidemiologist 流行1病学家),Gariepy is interested in patterns of disease. She studies teen obesity, or extreme overweight. In this study, she wanted to know how earlier school start times might be linked to weight.

“Overweight and obesity in adolescents is a big problem in North America," she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. About one in three U. S. and Canadian teens are now

overweight or obese. Kids who don't sleep enough may be at higher risk. So Gariepy decided to find more about the impact of school start times.

Her team collected start times of 362 Canadian schools and found that among “6 to 10" graders, those who started school earlier tended to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was linked, on average, to a slightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. But it's not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.

24. What is the function of the first paragraph?

A. To show concern for teenagers

B. To introduce the main topic

C. To show the importance of the study

D. To offer advice on school starting time

25. What does Gariepy want to find out in her research?

A. The links between school start times and teen obesity

B. How to rid adolescents of being overweight

C. Why more and more students are becoming obese

D. The most suitable sleep time for school students

26. What can we infer about the study of Gariepy and her team?

A. A 10-minute delay is enough    B. Schools may value its conclusion

C. More work remains to be done D. its conclusion is reliable

27. What can be a suitable title of this text?

A. Experts Worry about the Health of Adolescents

B. Overweight Becomes Common among teenagers

C. Study Links Weight to School Starting Time

D. Students Tend to Sleep Less Than Before

C

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

28. We can infer from the first paragraph that                          .

A. we should think about how to find our career

B. learning ability at school shows power in your job

C. a knowledge of each subject may be of value in your career

D. learning each subject well is an ability in many jobs

29. From the passage we learn that if a student's school performance is not good, he will              .

A. have no hope in his future work

B. be hopeful to find a suitable job

C. regret not having worked harder at school

D. have an opportunity of a new beginning in his future work

30. The underlined phrase "be all thumbs'' in Paragraph 3 probably means                         .

A. be the best B. be clumsy C. be important D. be skilled

31. The passage mainly discusses                         .

A. how to show strengths in your work

B. working experience and knowledge at school

C. the relationship between school performance and career

D. how to get a job

D

A food delivery man defeated a master from Peking University and won China Central Television's poetry contest on April 4. Lei Haiwei kept calm during the final of the Third Season of CCTVs Chinese Poetry Competition on Wednesday night, becoming the champion after defeating Peng Min, a master of literature from China's top university.

Last November. Lei went to Beijing and began recording the TV show after standing out from more than 70,000 people who signed up for the competition. After winning, Lei returned to I langzhou and continues his delivery work and the memorizing of poems.

Lei's outstanding performance during the final, and his inspirational story, have amazed Chinese audiences.

“His love of learning is so pure, it moved me to tears,"' one netizen said. "It always amazes me how some people simply hunger for knowledge/' another shared.

【范文】

How to prevent myopia?

Nowadays, there are more and more children suffering from myopia, which is mainly caused by excessive reading and close work. Over time this leads to permanent nearsightedness, even blindness. Here're some tips for us teenagers to prevent myopia.

First of all, allow the eyes to be rested. For example, after working for about 20 minutes, look away from one to two minutes, or close your eyes for 30 seconds to a minute. As reading when the distance changes continuously is harmful to the eyes, avoid reading books on vehicles. Since appropriate light holds the key to a good vision, always ensure a good light when reading or studying, even on daytime or nighttime. Finally, mind the gap from the eyes to the subjects when reading and writing. Only by doing these can we protect our eyes well.
