Heart-to-Heart Talks with Parents
As is shown in the bar chart, children spend less time
having heart-to-heart talks with their parents when they grow
older. For example, while the 7-9 age group spends as many as 6
hours per week on average, the 16-18 age group spends only half the
time.
There are two major reasons for this: both parents and children are
too busy working or studying, and there aren’t many topics of
common interest for them to talk about.
In my opinion, children should let their parents know more about
what they are interested in. At the same time, parents should spend
more time talking with their children and sharing opinions with
them. Only in this way can they better understand each other.
附录:
1. M: Hello! My name is Keith and I’m at your service tonight.
Are you ready to order?
W: Yes, I’d like the soup and salad special.
What’s the soup of the day?
2. W: I paid $200 for my new phone.
M: How come it was so cheap?
W: Well, I got $260 for my old phone when I
exchanged it.
3. W: You must have to drive pretty far, huh?
M: About two hours, but I don’t mind. I can’t
live without the wide-open space, the hiking trails, and the river
running through my back yard.
4. M: Take some flour, milk and sugar. Mix them, and add some
eggs into the mixture.
W: Right. I guess we can put it into the
oven.
M: Yes. And there is cream in the fridge. You
can decorate it when it’s done.
5. W: Would you take care of your parents when they grow
old?
M: My wife and I are doing that now. We have
to take care of both of your parents and we still have children at
home.
W: You are a typical sandwich generation.
6. M: I really enjoyed the class. The teacher knows how to teach
effectively.
W: Yes. And the textbook is also interesting
with lots of vivid illustrations.
M: I’m glad that I decided to take the
course. By the way, I don’t think we’ve met before. I’m Peter from
New York.
W: I’m Mary Smith. Nice to meet you.
M: Were you reading a novel just now? Sorry I
interrupted you.
W: Well, it doesn’t matter. I love reading
books for fun whenever I have some free time. It is really relaxing
especially after a stressful day.
7. W: Good morning. Can I help you?
M: I’d like to make a complaint about my
holiday in Portugal last week.
W: I’m sorry to hear that. What exactly was
the problem?
M: First of all, the coach taking us to the
hotel broke down and we had to wait for over two hours before a
replacement arrived. Then when we got to the hotel we found out the
room was small and hadn’t been cleaned.
W: Oh dear!
M: Anyway, that’s not all. The people in the
room above us sounded like they were having all-night parties,
every night. I demanded another room but the receptionist told me
the hotel was full.
W: I do apologize.
8. M: Hey, Deb, let’s go to a movie. You’ve been working on
these bills for hours now.
W: You’re impossible!
M: Why?
W: Haven’t I been telling you that we can
barely make ends meet?
M: But I’ve been trying to cut down on our
expenses lately.
W: Well, maybe, but you’ve been turning up
the heat to 70 degrees Fahrenheit every day and that’s been costing
us an additional $70 to $80 a month.
M: Deb, you know I’ve had to do that. I get
sick every single time the temperature goes below 68 degrees
Fahrenheit.
W: Oh, Oh. Look at this telephone bill! It’s
for $90! That’s impossible! Have you been making calls to Edison,
New York?
M: Oh, yeah. I did make just one call there
last month.
W: Well, they charged us for four calls. Mmm.
I’ll have to call them and figure it out.
9. M: Hello, young lady. What seems to be the problem?
W: I have an upset stomach, and I couldn’t
sleep last night because of it.
M: I see, and what did you eat for dinner
last night?
W: Well, my mother cooked some crabs, but I’m
the only one who has stomach problems.
M: Hmm, did you eat anything that the rest of
your family did not?
W: Not at dinner, but I went out with my
friends and had dessert afterwards.
M: Ah, then perhaps that explains your upset
stomach. Alright, I’ll give you some medicine for it. But I’ll need
some personal information first. What is your full name? And your
ID card number followed by your address and telephone number?
W: It’s Caroline Chan. My ID card number is
D543763. My address is Flat B, 17th floor, Happy House, Wan Chai.
And my telephone number is 76438725.
M: 76438725. Alright. OK, so for this
medicine, you need to take it three times daily for two days.
W: Thank you.
10. M:
Hello, everyone. Today I’m going to talk about first
impressions.
According to psychologists, people form first impressions based
first on how you look, then on how you sound, and finally on what
you say.
Your physical appearance—how you look—makes up 55 percent of a
first impression. This includes facial expressions, body language,
and eye contact, as well as clothing and general appearance.
The way you sound makes up 38 percent of the first impression.
People listen to your tone of voice and decide whether you sound
friendly or unfriendly, interested or bored, and happy or sad.
What you say—the actual words you use—counts for only 7 percent of
the message.
People form their first impressions within ten seconds of meeting
you. And first impressions don’t change easily. If someone gets the
wrong impression of you, it can take a long time to change his or
her mind.
