SAT阅读精讲（6）- 记述文短文之一

在第一讲中，我们曾说记述文是描述人的经历，或是人对事情的经过感受。在第三讲中，我们借助佛法也详细地说明“我”，“经历”，“我的经历”等第一人称记述文写作概念与技术。在此，我们再简要回顾一下：“我”是“眼耳鼻舌身意”（六根）的对“外界”（四大组成）的一个感受映射。“我的经历”是“色受想行识”（五蕴）的反复运作。

既记述文是我的感官对外部世界的感受和认知过程的描写。下面本是一个自然段，并非是一篇文章的记述文。但是，英语文章往往是采用写作“基因”；就是说，一些自然段往往和整篇文章使用的写作技术相对称。这种在典型段落里采用的机构，会对称扩大到整个文章。其原理如同田野上的野花，那些小花瓣如此地相像，一层层扩大，而且，保持整个花的外型与小花瓣的相似性。我们来看下面一段文字，作者通过“视觉”和“意识”来论述一段过去的经历。

When the tide was in and the water rose up to within a foot of the lawn, we children boasted that we could fish out of our bedroom windows. This was not quite true. But it was true that, from our front lawn, the house was full of waves. When the tide was up and the sun was shining, the white front of the house was in movement with reflected waves. The tall windows became so solid in color and form, gold and blue, that the house seemed to be full of sea; until, of course, one turned round and saw the real sea, so miraculously real that it startled.

解析：

记述文的开始是setting，既是故事发生的场景和人物。场景：“我们这些孩子嘻嘻在海潮漫入房前草地的时刻。”作者讲述这个情景，并用：我们这些孩子说：“从卧室的窗户就能钓鱼”这种夸张的话，规范后面的故事空间（thematic space）和逻辑（logic）思维范畴（reasoning structure）。既然是吹牛的话，自然会出现：“This was not quite true. But it was true that,…”这样的接续。

这种反衬技术在SAT考试的短文中常常出现。例如，我曾读过一篇短文这样开头：“七月的夏天，我坐在房前的凉台上，战栗着仿佛回到了2000年前。是的，我不能回到从前。但是，我在读2000年前的一些书简感受那时代作者的感受。”就写作技术和语言逻辑而言，这几乎和本文的开头一模一样。

接下来，作者通过描绘自己眼睛看到的外部世界，与自己的想象，给出了他们小时刻吹牛：“在床上就能钓鱼”的理由：“站在房前草坪，踏着涨起的海潮，看到白色的房子映射蓝蓝的涟漪，巨大的窗户满是海洋。”这是一个视觉的盛宴：“色”是海、房子、阳光；“受”是色在他眼中的海潮与房子及相互之间的映象；“想”是，他认为这些映象“老”海洋了。在这段记述文中，这也是故事高潮。故事到此也就该收拾一下结束了。

立刻，作者提升认识：“但当回头看（背对房子，面向大海），我们面对的是真正的充满神奇魅力的真正的大海。”

这么一个小小的段落，作者还是严格遵守记述文的写作规范。看来，这种规范不仅是对写作者的约束，更重要的是这种规范蕴含一种人的感官所享受的结构上的“美”，所以，人们自觉或不自觉地运用这些写作规范与技术。

模仿写作例子：

When the clouds were in and the fog rose up to over the observation desk on the top of the Yellow mountain, we children boasted that we could fly out of our observation windows. This was not quite true. But it was true that, from the front view, the observation dorm was full of clouds. When the fog was up and the light was shrinking, the dorm was in movement relatively reflected the move of the clouds. The small windows unidentified in color and form, that the house seemed to be part of the mountain; until, of course, one turned round and saw the inside of the dorm, so miraculously real that it startled.

作业：

Homework 1: imitate it with one of your experience to replace tide and house.

Homework 2: read it loudly few times and try to memorize its structure and logic.
