Gina was surprised to find that it was not raining in London. She stepped down from the train that had brought her from Dover to Victoria Station and put her heavy suitcase on the platform. People were hurrying everywhere: through the entrances and exits, up and down the steps, along the other platforms and over to the ticket counters where there were already queues forming. The porters seemed to be busy helping other passengers. In Milan everyone told her that it was always raining in England. Today, however, they were wrong. It was warm and dusty just like at home, she could even hear someone speaking her native language somewhere near the station bookstall. She walked slowly towards the gate at the end of the platform where a railway official was collecting the tickets. She handed him her tickets and walked through. She looked up the station clock. Its hands were pointing to 3:15pm.
A young woman was sitting on a bench reading an English magazine. She looked friendly so Gina went up to her.
“Excuse me,” she said. The young woman glanced up with a smile. “Can you tell me the way to the circus?”
“The circus?” The young woman looked puzzled. “What circus do you mean?”
Gina shook her head, “I’m sorry. I have just arrived from Italy to attend a school for overseas(海外) students in London. It is near the circus.”
“Do you have a letter with the school’s address on it?”
“Oh, yes. Now I remember. ” Gina opened her handbag and found a postcard with a British stamp on it.
“Ah,” said the young woman. “It’s Oxford Circus that you want. It’s the name of an area in the middle of London. You must go down these steps and take the Tube. Follow the colors. That’s the easiest way.” She showed Gina on the colored map of the underground railway the route from Victoria to Oxford Circus. “Good luck,” she said. “And by the way, I come from Italy, too.”

Why should anyone want to set aside a day to honor a lowly little groundhog(土拨鼠)? The answer to that question is not certain, but a group of people get together every February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch Punxsutawney “Pete” leave his burrow. What “Pete” does next, many believe, will show whether spring is just around the corner or a long way off. You see, in Pennsylvania on this date there is usually a great deal of snow on the ground, and the little animal has been hibernating during the long, cold winter. He filled himself during the autumn months and then went into his burrow for a long sleep, his body fat helping keep him alive. But as he appears on February 2, he looks very thin. If the sun is shining brightly and he sees his shadow, according to old stores, it frightens him back into his home where he will stay another six weeks. Should it be cloudy and gray, the little animal will supposedly walk around for food—a sure sign that spring is near. While many believe in the groundhog’s information about future happening, it is unwise to accept them as a fact.

  68. According to this passage, why do people gather every year to watch the groundhog?
  A. He’s clever and playful, and children love to watch him.
  B. He’s looking for food and the people want to help him find it in the snow.
  C. Many people believe him to be a sign of the coming of spring.
  D. The people want to be sure he is alive after such a long winter.

  69. How does the groundhog manage to stay alive during the long winter?
  A. People send out food for him.
  B. He stores body fat before winter comes.
  C. He wakes up on nice days and hunts for food.
  D. It is something unknown to people.

  70. What information does the groundhog supposedly give?
  A. If he sees his shadow, it will soon be spring.
  B. If he sees his shadow, spring will not arrive for another six weeks.
  C. If he does not see his shadow, spring will arrive in six weeks.
  D. If he does not see his shadow, all the snow will disappear immediately.

  71. What does the word “burrow” mean in the passage? It means _____.
  A. hole in the wall B. cave
  C. underground hole D. cottage on a hill

Researchers have announced the results of two studies on the health effects of the drug aspirin. One study shows aspirin can sharply reduce the chance that a healthy, older man will suffer from a heart attack.
The study offered two new results from earlier findings. It said taking one aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with low blood cholesterol(胆固醇) levels.
Earlier studies showed that aspirin reduced the chance of heart attacks in men with heart disease. But there was no proof that aspirin would do the same for healthy men.
Researchers in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s. It included 22,000 healthy male doctors. All were between the age of forty and eighty-four. More than 11,000 of the doctors took one aspirin pill every other day. Each pill contained 325 milligram of aspirin. The other 11,000 doctors took a harmless pill that contained no drug. The men did not know which kind of pill they were taking.
The doctors who took aspirin suffered 44 percent fewer heart attacks than those taking the harmless pill. 139 men who took aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Ten of them died. 239 men who did not take aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Twenty-six of them died.
The researchers said the doctors’ study provides clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the result do not mean every man over the age of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin cannot help men who do not eat healthy foods, who smoke cigarettes and who are fat. The researchers said men who think they would be helped by taking aspirin should talk with their doctors first.

  72. The passage tells us that the new use of aspirin is _____.
  A. to treat heart disease
  B. to reduce pain while one suffers from a heart attack
  C. to help old people to be more healthy
  D. to reduce the chance of a heart attack in old men

  73. Aspirin can help those who _____.
  A. work as doctors B. are under 40 years old
  C. are fat and smoke cigarettes D. are older and healthy

  74. At last the researchers advise us to take aspirin _____.
  A. with care B. as much as we like
  C. every day D. only considering the age

  75. From the experiment we can conclude that about _____ of people who suffered from heart attacks without aspirin died.
  A. 7% B. 11% C. 19% D. 44%
