『4.1』zǐ yuē :“lǐ rén wéi měi 。zhái

『4.1』子 曰 :“里 仁 为 美 。 择 不 处 仁 ,焉

『4.2』子 曰 :“不 仁 者 不 可 以 久 处 约 ,不 可
yǐ cháng chù lè 。rén zhě ān rén ,zhī zhě lì rén 。”
以 长 处 乐 。仁 者 安 仁 ,知 者 利 仁 。”
『4.3』zǐ yuē :“wéi rén zhě néng hǎo rén ,néng è rén 。”
『4.3』子 曰 :“唯 仁 者 能 好 人 , 能 恶人 。”
『4.4』zǐ yuē :“gǒu zhì yū rén yǐ ,wú è yě 。”
『4.4』子 曰 :“苟 志 於 仁 矣 ,无 恶也 。”
『4.5』zǐ yuē :“fù yǔ guì ,shì rén zhī suǒ yù yě ;bù yǐ

仁 ,恶乎 成 名 ?君 子 无 终 食 之 间 违 仁 ,
zào cì bì yū shì ,diān pèi bì yū shì 。”
造 次 必 於 是 , 颠 沛 必 於 是 。”
『4.6』zǐ yuē :“wǒ wèi jiàn hǎo rén zhě ,wù bù rén zhě 。
『4.6』子 曰 :“我 未 见 好 仁 者 ,恶 不 仁 者 。
hǎo rén zhě ,wú yǐ shàng zhī ;wù bù rén zhě ,qí wéi
好 仁 者 ,无 以 尚 之 ;恶 不 仁 者 ,其 为
rén yǐ ,bù shǐ bù rén zhě jiā hū qí shēn 。yǒu néng yī
仁 矣 ,不 使 不 仁 者 加 乎 其 身 。有 能 一
rì yòng qí lì yū rén yǐ hū ?wǒ wèi jiàn lì bù zú zhě 。gài
日 用 其 力 於 仁 矣 乎 ?我 未 见 力 不 足 者 。盖

斯 知 仁 矣 。”
『4.8』zǐ yuē :“cháo wén dào ,xī sǐ kě yǐ 。”
『4.8』子 曰 :“ 朝 闻 道 ,夕 死 可 矣 。”
『4.9』zǐ yuē :“shì zhì yū dào ,ér chǐ è yī è shí zhě ,
『4.9』子 曰 :“士 志 於 道 ,而 耻 恶衣 恶食 者 ,
wèi zú yǔ yì yě 。”
未 足 与 议 也 。”
『4.10』zǐ yuē :“jūn zǐ zhī yū tiān xià yě ,wú shì yě ,
『4.10』子 曰 :“君 子 之 於 天 下 也 ,无 适 也 ,
wú mò yě ,yì zhī yǔ bǐ 。”
无 莫 也 ,义 之 与 比 。”
『4.11』zǐ yuē :“jūn zǐ huái dé ,xiǎo rén huái tǔ ;jūn
『4.11』子 曰 :“君 子 怀 德 , 小 人 怀 土 ;君
zǐ huái xíng ,xiǎo rén huái huì 。”
子 怀 刑 , 小 人 怀 惠 。”
『4.12』zǐ yuē :“fàng yū lì ér xíng ,duō yuàn 。”
『4.12』子 曰 :“ 放 於 利 而 行 ,多 怨 。”
『4.13』zǐ yuē :“néng yǐ lǐ ràng wèi guó hū ?hé yǒu ?bù
『4.13』子 曰 :“ 能 以 礼 让 为 国 乎 ?何 有 ?不
néng yǐ lǐ ràng wèi guó ,rú lǐ hé ?”
能 以 礼 让 为 国 ,如 礼 何 ?”
『4.14』zǐ yuē :“bù huàn wú wèi ,huàn suǒ yǐ lì 。bù huàn
『4.14』子 曰 :“不 患 无 位 , 患 所 以 立 。不 患
mò jǐ zhī ,qiú wéi kě zhì yě 。”
莫 己 知 ,求 为 可 知 也 。”
『4.15』zǐ yuē :“cān hū !wú dào yī yǐ guàn zhī 。”zēng
『4.15』子 曰 :“参 乎 !吾 道 一 以 贯 之 。” 曾
zǐ yuē :“wéi 。”
子 曰 :“唯 。”
zǐ chū ,mén rén wèn yuē :“hé wèi yě ?”zēng zǐ yuē:
子 出 ,门 人 问 曰 :“何 谓 也 ?” 曾 子 曰 :
“fū zǐ zhī dào ,zhōng shù ér yǐ yǐ 。”
“夫 子 之 道 , 忠 恕 而 已 矣 。”

『4.16』子 曰 :“君 子 喻 於 义 , 小 人 喻 於 利 。”
『4.17』zǐ yuē :“jiàn xián sī qí yān ,jiàn bù xián ér
『4.17』子 曰 :“ 见 贤 思 齐 焉 , 见 不 贤 而
nèi zì xǐng yě 。”
内 自 省 也 。”
『4.18』zǐ yuē :“shì fù mǔ jī jiàn ,jiàn zhì bù cóng ,
『4.18』子 曰 :“事 父 母 几 谏 , 谏 志 不 从 ,
yòu jìng bù wéi ,láo ér bù yuàn 。”
又 敬 不 违 ,劳 而 不 怨 。”
『4.19』zǐ yuē :“fù mǔ zài ,bù yuǎn yóu ,yóu bì yǒu fāng 。”
『4.19』子 曰 :“父 母 在 ,不 远 游 ,游 必 有 方 。”
『4.20』zǐ yuē :“sān nián wú gǎi yū fù zhī dào ,kě wèi
『4.20』子 曰 :“三 年 无 改 於 父 之 道 ,可 谓
xiào yǐ 。”
孝 矣 。”
『4.21』zǐ yuē :“fù mǔ zhī nián ,bù kě bù zhì yě 。yī
『4.21』子 曰 :“父 母 之 年 ,不 可 不 知 也 。一
zé yǐ xǐ ,yī zé yǐ jù 。”
则 以 喜 ,一 则 以 惧 。”
『4.22』zǐ yuē :“gǔ zhě yán zhī bù chū ,chǐ gōng zhī bù
『4.22』子 曰 :“古 者 言 之 不 出 ,耻 躬 之 不
dǎi yě 。”

『4.23』zǐ yuē :“yǐ yuē shī zhī zhě xiān yǐ 。”
『4.23』子 曰 :“以 约 失 之 者 鲜 矣 。”
『4.24』zǐ yuē :“jūn zǐ yù nè yū yán ér mǐn yū xíng 。”
『4.24』子 曰 :“君 子 欲 讷 於 言 而 敏 於 行 。”
『4.25』zǐ yuē :“dé bù gū ,bì yǒu lín 。”
『4.25』子 曰 :“德 不 孤 ,必 有 邻 。”
『4.26』zǐ yóu yuē :“shì jūn shù ,sī rǔ yǐ ;péng yǒu shù,
『4.26』子 游 曰 :“事 君 数 ,斯 辱 矣 ; 朋 友 数 ,
sī shū yǐ 。”
斯 疏 矣 。”

英语翻译English Translation:
4:1
Confucius said: "As for a neighborhood, it is its jen that makes it
beautiful. If you choose to live in a place that lacks jen, how can
you grow in wisdom?"
4:2 Confucius said: "If you lack jen you can't handle long periods
of difficulty or long periods of comfortability. Jen men are
comfortable in jen. The wise take advantage of jen."
4:3 Confucius said: "Only the jen person is able to really like
others or to really dislike them."
4:4 Confucius said: "If you are really committed to jen, you will
have no evil in you."
4:5 Confucius said, "Riches and honors are what all men desire. But
if they cannot be attained in accordance with the Tao they should
not be kept. Poverty and low status are what all men hate. But if
they cannot avoided in while staying in accordance with the Tao,
you should not avoid them. If a Superior Man departs from jen, how
can he be worthy of that name? A Superior Man never leaves jen for
even the time of a single meal. In moments of haste he acts
according to it. In times of difficulty or confusion he acts
according to it."
4:6 Confucius said: "I have never seen one who really loves jen or
really hates non-jen. If you really loved jen you would not place
anything above it. If you really hated the non-jen, you would not
let it near you. Is there anyone who has devoted their strength to
jen for a single day? I have not seen anyone who has lacked the
strength to do so. Perhaps there has been such a case, but I have
never seen it."
4:7 Confucius said: "People err according to their own level. It is
by observing a person's mistakes that you can know his/her
goodness."
[Comment] No one is perfect, free from error. But when someone
makes a mistake in a human relationship, we can tell by the type of
mistake, and by the person's way of dealing with it, what her/his
true character is like.
4:8 Confucius said: "If I can hear
the Tao in the morning, in the evening I can die content."
4:9 "A shih who is set on the way, but is ashamed of old clothes
and coarse food, is not worth consulting."
[Comment] The title shih is usually translated into English as
either "knight" or "scholar." While the shih of later Chinese
history is more definitely a scholar than a knight, in the
Analects, what Confucius is referring to is a level of
spiritual/moral development, as well as academic and martial
cultivation which is clearly above that of the average person.
Thus, we can understand the shih to be a person who is well on the
way toward becoming a "Superior Man," but is not quite there yet. I
am reluctant to render shih, as either "scholar" or "knight"
because of the limitations in meaning that occur with these English
words.
4:10 Confucius said: "When the
Superior Man deals with the world he is not prejudiced for or
against anything. He does what is Right."
4:11 Confucius said: "The Superior Man cares about virtue; the
inferior man cares about material things. The Superior Man seeks
discipline; the inferior man seeks favors."
4:12 Confucius said: "If you do everything with a concern for your
own advantage, you will be resented by many people."
4:13 Confucius said: "If you can govern the country by putting
propriety first, what else will you need to do? If you can't govern
your country by putting propriety first, how could you even call it
propriety?"
4:14 Confucius said: "I don't worry abut not having a good
position; I worry about the means I use to gain position. I don't
worry about being unknown; I seek to be known in the right
way."
4:15 Confucius said: "Shan, my Tao is penetrated by a single
thread." Tseng Tzu said, "Yes." When the Master left, some
disciples asked what he meant. Tseng Tzu said, "Our master's Tao is
to be sincere and fair, and that's it."
4:16 Confucius said: "The Superior Man is aware of Righteousness,
the inferior man is aware of advantage."
4:17 Confucius said: "When you see a good person, think of becoming
like her/him. When you see someone not so good, reflect on your own
weak points."
4:18 Confucius said: "When you serve your mother and father it is
okay to try to correct them once in a while. But if you see that
they are not going to listen to you, keep your respect for them and
don't distance yourself from them. Work without complaining."
4:19 Confucius said: "While your parents are alive, it is better
not to travel far away. If you do travel, you should have a precise
destination."
4:20 Confucius said: "If, for three years (after your father's
death) you don't alter his ways of doing things, you can certainly
be called 'filial.'"
4:21 Confucius said: "Your parents' age should not be ignored.
Sometimes it will be a source of joy, and sometimes it will be a
source of apprehension."
4:22 Confucius said: "The ancients were hesitant to speak, fearing
that their actions would not do justice to their words."
4:23 Confucius said: "If you are strict with yourself, your
mistakes will be few."
4:24 Confucius said: "The Superior Man desires to be hesitant in
speech, but sharp in action."
4:25 Confucius said: "If you are virtuous, you will not be lonely.
You will always have friends.”
4:26 Tzu Yu said: "In serving your prince, frequent remonstrance
will lead to disgrace. With friends, frequent remonstrance will
lead to separation."
