Housing shortage is a thorny problem. The houses price is increasingly soaring and consequently numerous people cannot afford the notoriously expensive price of housing in many countries. Some people argue that only government could assume the obligation of dealing with housing scarcity, however, as far as I am concerned, this opinion is not completely true. This essay will explore the roles that governments play in the process of resolving housing shortage and other means to tackle housing shortage.

Admittedly, as the highest administrative organ, government has an irreplaceable part to play in stabilizing the housing prices and combating the illegal speculation of some greedy real estate developers. Firstly, it is imperative for governments to enact relevant legislations to regulate the construction and purchase of the houses. Secondly, some wealthy investors purchase millions of houses in order to gain personal interest, which multiplies the pressure of other house buyers. In this sense, it is the duty of governments to re-adjust banking polices to restrict the purchase of speculative houses. Lastly, as for those poverty-stricken citizens, subsidies should be given from the public purse.  

Yet, apart from the function of government, there are still many other options available to resolve housing shortage. On the part of the property developers, they ought to be inspired to build up more economically affordable houses. To illustrate, instead of establishing unreasonably luxurious villas for the minority of rich people, more houses with low price and small space should be constructed. Meanwhile, as the consumers of houses, every potential house buyer ought to work diligently to raise money for a rainy day, only in this way can they create a better place to live as quickly as possible.

To sum up, it is rather superficial to say only the government can resolve the problem of housing shortage. Speaking for myself, joint efforts should be made by government, real estimate companies and every individual house buyers.（318）
