They brought me a quilled, yellow dahlia,

Opulent, flaunting.

Round gold

Flung out of a pale green stalk.

Round, ripe gold

Of maturity,

Meticulously frilled and flaming,

A fire-ball of proclamation:

Fecundity decked in staring yellow

For all the world to see.

They brought a quilled, yellow dahlia,

To me who am barren

Shall I send it to you,

You who have taken with you

All I once possessed?

译注：

quill, 本意是鸟类的大翎毛，后用来做羽毛笔，因此有“筒”的含义。作动词用时，指把布料的边卷成小筒状，做成褶边。用于大丽花时，指花瓣两侧向里卷曲，形成类似筒状的花瓣。因为quill的“刚毛”本意，它还可引申为尖利、能刺穿的意思，如刺猬（豪猪）的刚毛一样。我想诗人用这个词的意图也许就在于此吧。最初的翻译是“卷瓣”，后改为“针瓣”，也是为了能体现这个含义。
