1.       at the end of在……末端，在……尽头，可指时间和空间

by the end of  到。。。末为止   in the end最后（=finally）

2. because of 因为…… （注意和because 的区别）
Many beautiful fish are fast disappearing _________the serious pollution.

We can’t go out ________ it is raining heavily outside.
3. even if (= even thoug)  即使，用来引导一个让步状语从句

如：Even though/if it rains tomorrow, we will leave for Beijing.

Even if we can go out for a play, we won't do.
4. come up 走近，发生，出现  come up with 追上，赶上，提出

A child came up to me and showed me the way to the station.

Your question came up at the meeting.

He came up with a good plan at the meeting.

5. be based on 以……为基础

This book is based on a true story that happened in the 1930s.

The reporter asked the writer who he based his character on.

6. at present 目前，眼下

7. make (great/ good/better/full)use of
We have a lot of work to do, so we have to make good use of time.

8. such as 例如  for example 指举例子，其后有逗号或位于句末。
In this paragraph there are many nouns, such as boy, girl, and book.

Many great men have risen from poverty---Lincoln, for example.

You can take your research work for example.
9. believe it or not 信不信由你
10. play a role/ part (in) 在…中担任角色；在…中起作用;扮演一个角色；参与
play an important role/ part 在…中起重要作用
Deng Xiaoping played an important part in developing the economy in China.

12. command n. & vt.

command sb. to do sth. 命令某人做某事

command that ＋ sb. ＋(should)＋ do sth.

The commander commanded that everyone die rather than give in.

The teacher commanded all the students not to leave the classroom before he returned.

13.request n. & vt.  要求，请求

He was there at the request of his manager

His request is that the work (should) be finished as soon as possible.

You are requested not to smoke in public.

The guide requested that the visitors not park the car at the gate.

It is requested that…根据要求……
