Teaching Plan
The Wrong Kind of Small Talk
Teaching objectives :
1. Knowledge and skill:
1) To get the students to master some key words and expressions to
enlarge their vocabulary;
2) To train the skills of fast reading and careful reading;
3) To develop students’ communicative ability by learning the
text.
2. Emotion and values
To get the students to experience the wrong kind of small talk, and
learn to avoid such embarrassment in the daily communication.
3. Cultural awareness:
To enable the students to learn about the English culture of social
communication and develop their social skills in their daily
life..
4. Learning strategies:
1) Memory strategies: creating mental
linkages
2) Cognitive strategies: receiving and sending information
3) Social strategies: asking questions; cooperating with others;
communicating with others.
Teaching importance and difficulties
1)Vocabulary
awkward, outspoken, absence, cautious, clerk, modest,
hostess.
2)Sentence structure
I guess they chose you to discourage you from spending your whole
career with us.
3)Improve students’ ability of reading fast and grasping useful
information to comprehend passages.
Teaching strategies:
Student-centered teaching; task-based learning, pair-work; group
work and cooperative learning.
Teaching aids: a multimedia computer
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Pre-reading
A video leads in the topic of the wrong kind of small talk
Step 2. Fast reading
Get the students to read the whole passage silently and choose the
best answer.
Step 3 Careful reading
Careful reading for filling in a form of the brief introduction to
Esther
Step 4 Paras.3--22
According to the stories, fill in the blanks.
Step 5 Paras.3--8
Design reading comprehension about the first two
stories.
Step 6 Paras.9--15
Fill in the blank and answer the question
Step 7 Paras. 16—18
Find out the sentence which has the similar meaning.
Step 8 Paras. 19—22
Pair work: To make up a dialogue between Esther and her friend to
experience the embarrassment of the wrong kind of small talk. And
then act it out.
Step 9 Sum up the structure of the passage. Learn of the author’s
attitude.
Step 10 Finish the summary
Step 11 Free talk
To avoid such wrong kind of small talk, what should we do and what
shouldn’t we do? Please give some advice.
Step 12 Homework.
Please write a letter to give Esther some advice on how to do
proper small talk
