Joanne was stuck in a traffic jam in central Birmingham at 5: 30 and at 6: 30 she was expected to be chairing a meeting of the tennis club. At last, the traffic was moving. She swung quickly racing to her house. As she opened the door, she nearly tripped(绊) over Sheba.
“Hey, Sheba,” she said, “I've got no time for you now, but I'll take you out as soon as I get back from tennis club.” Then she noticed Sheba seemed to be coughing or choking. Obviously, she could hardly breathe. Immediately, Joanne realized she would have to take her to the vet(兽医).
When she got there, the vet was just about to close for the day. Seeing the state of Sheba, Dr. Sterne brought her quickly into his office.
“Listen, doctor, I’m really in a rush to get to a meeting. Can I leave her with you, and go and get changed? I'll be back in ten minutes to pick her up, and then I'll take her on to the meeting with me. Is that OK?”
“Sure.” said the doctor.
Joanne made the quick trip back to her house in a couple of minutes. As she was once more entering the hallway, the phone by the door began to ring.
“This is Dr. Sterne,” said an anxious voice. “I want you to get out of that house immediately,” said the doctor's voice. “I'm coming round right away, and the police will be there any time now. Wait outside!”
At that moment, a police car screeched to a stop outside the house. Two policemen got out and ran into the house. Joanne was by now completely confused and very frightened. Then the doctor arrived.
“Where’s Sheba? Is she OK?” shouted Joanne.
“She’s fine, Joanne. I took out the thing which was choking her, and she’s OK now.”
Just then, the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced man, who could hardly walk. There was blood all over him.
“My God,” said Joanne, “how did he get in there? And how did you know he was there?”
“I think he must be a burglar.” said the doctor. “I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was stuck in Sheba’s throat: it turned out to be three human fingers.”

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali(碱性的) sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and it is the lowest point in the United States.
Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”—the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849 when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure ended with a disaster. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.
Here nature created a lot of surprising scenes, almost like the sights on the moon, ever changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

THE BRONTE FAMILY
Yorkshire, England was the setting for two great novels of the 19th century. There were Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters’.
Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.
Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes.
As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor, Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher, but there was no interest shown in Charlotte’s book. (It was not published until 1859.) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847.
Jane Eyre was immediately successful; the other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal-like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of her book, and Anne died in 1849.
Charlotte published Shirley in 1849, and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis(肺结核) as her sisters had.
48.What did the Bronte sisters want to do for Branwell Bronte?

C. Teach him how to draw well.            D. Teach him how to educate himself.

Technology today has stolen away our voices and robbed our children of memories. I’ve been keeping count of how often people sing around the house these days. The fact is, they don’t.
My earliest memories are of my mother sang lullabies(催眠曲) in a gentle low voice as she rocked each infant in turn. She said she “didn’t have a singing voice,” but her low, wavering alto will always mean comfort to me. Every time I have sat through the night with a feverish baby or held a pre-schooler through a nightmare, the melodies returned, words appearing and disappearing like fragments of a dream but held together by the hum(低声吟唱) of love.
Today, young mothers are routinely presented with lullaby tapes at the baby shower. When baby cries, the idea goes, they will be able to switch on the high-tech audio system and the little one will drift off with the voices of strangers in his ears, perfectly on pitch. If I had my way, new parents would learn the songs themselves, throw out their stereos, and give their child the gift of their own sleepy voices through the midnight hours.
These days, when we go on a trip, my daughters take along tiny personal stereos and headphones. They are lost in their private worlds, and I can’t help wishing that at least here, in the car my girls would be forced to listen to their mother’s voice raised in lost-the-words again, sure I’m out-of-tune songs that they might then pass down to another generation. Those sophisticated earphones have robbed them of something I think every kid should carry from childhood car trips into adulthood.
I drove away from that party humming, and all the way home the good old songs kept tumbling out. Damn it(该死), I thought, why did I ever stop singing in the car and start turning on the radio instead? Why don’t I sing any more while I’m doing the dishes? I’m going to yank(拉扯) those stereo wires right out of the wall when I get home. We’re going to sing grace before meals, sing carols around the piano, sing in the shower instead of switching on that waterproof radio that stole away our voices and our souls.
53.The author hates today’s technology because_________.
A. driving a car requires high concentration
B. children are learning pop songs from tapes
C. children have lost touch with good old songs
D. high-tech systems do not record the voices of aged people 
54.The underlined sentence “the little one will drift off” in Paragraph 3 means that “______”.
A. the play of the high-tech system is of little use B. the high-tech system will play on and on
C. the low voice will excite the baby           D. the baby will slowly go to sleep
55.To the author, the voices of strangers _________.
A. are not familiar to the baby        B. lack the motherly love the baby needs
C. work better to stop the baby’s cry   D. surely sound more pleasant 
56.What the author wishes to make her girls do is to _________.
A. help memorize the words while she is singing B. take off their well-designed earphones
C. listen and learn the old songs from her       D. remember their childhood car trips

The producers of instant coffee found their product strongly resisted in the market places despite their product’s manifest(明显的) advantages. Furthermore, the advertising expenditure(花费) for instant coffee was far greater than that for regular coffee. Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers’ seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product. The reason given by most people was dislike for the taste. The producers suspected that there might be deeper reasons, however. This was confirmed by one of motivation(动机) research’s classic studies, one often cited in the trade.
Mason Haire, of the University of California, constructed two shopping lists that were the same except for one item. There were six items common to both lists, hamburger, carrots, bread, baking powder, canned peaches, and potatoes, with the brands or amounts specified. The seventh item, in fifth place on both lists, read “Maxwell House Coffee” on one list and “Nestle Instant Coffee” on the other. One list was given to each one in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in another group of the same size. The women were asked to study their lists and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of women (“personality and character”) who would draw up that shopping list. Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and a poor planner. On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was a poor planner. Eight women felt that the instant coffee user was probably not a good wife! No one in the other group drew such a conclusion about the housewife who intended to buy regular coffee.

57.According to the passage, most people said they didn’t like instant coffee because ____.
A. they didn’t like its taste
B. it had many disadvantages
C. they didn’t want to be lazy housewives and poor planners
D. it was made worse by too much advertising
58.Which of the following was confirmed by the motivation studies?
A. Instant coffee was strongly resisted in the market places.
B. There might be deeper reasons in the resistance to instant coffee.
C. The advertising expenditure for instant coffee was far greater than that for regular coffee.
D. It was a lazy housewife who used instant coffee.
59.Which of the following statements is true about the result of the test?
A. Nearly half of the women tested described the instant coffee user as a lazy housewife and a poor planner.
B. About fifty percent of the women were housewives.
C. Many women believed that housewives who used instant coffee were lazy.
D. Housewives who used regular coffee were good planners.
60.According to the passage, many women preferred regular coffee to instant coffee because ____.
A. they felt unconsciously(下意识地) ashamed of preparing instant coffee
B. regular coffee tasted better than instant coffee.
C. they intended to do something in a hard way
D. they don’t like to change their way of doing things

Dear Peter,
I remember you told me you were interested in teaching in China. Our school now is looking for a native-speaker to teach some courses to senior high students. If you come, you can choose three of the following four courses: Speaking, Writing, Britain Today and American Today, and teach 12 hours a week. The students who are going to take these courses have at least three years of English learning experiences. Besides teaching, you will also work as an advisor to our students’ English club or our school’s English newspaper.
Please tell me know if you are interested and if you have any other questions. I’d be more than happy to help.
Best,
Li Hua
