My Teacher
Before Annie Sullivan came to our house, one or two people had told my mother that I was simple-minded. I can understand why. Here was a seven-year-old girl who at the age of 19 months had become deaf and blind. And because I was deaf, I could not learn to speak. Struggling in a world of silence and darkness, I must have appeared to them to be simple.
But this was before Annie Sullivan came to stay. She was a lively young woman with patience and imagination. A born teacher, she thought she could turn a deaf-blind person into a useful human being. What a difficult case I must have been to this young teacher! I remember the many times she tried to spell words into my small hand. But neither words nor letters meant anything to me. I thought her finger movements were some kind of game. But at last, one day, she reached my understanding. About a month after her arrival, she taught me the word water. It happened at the well where I was holding a jar while Annie pumped. As the water flowed onto my hand, she kept spelling w-a-t-e-r into my other hand with her fingers. Suddenly I understood!
It was the first joy I had known for years. I reached out to Annie’s hand. She understood I was begging for new words, for the names of the things I touched. The words---so full of meaning---flew from her hand to mine. Those first words were to change my world. One of the first things Annie did was to teach me how to play. I had not laughed since I became deaf. One day she came into my room laughing happily. Putting my hand on her face, she spelled l-a-u-g-h. Then she touched me lightly on my arm and made me burst into laughter. Next Annie took me by the hand and taught me how to jump. She then immediately spelled the word j-u-m-p for me. In a few days I was learning—and enjoying it—like any child. Through my hands and fingers, I “heard” the sounds that one hears on a farm, the noises made by cows, horses, chickens and pigs. She also brought me into touch with everything that could be felt—soil, wood, silk. As I look back upon those years, I am struck by Annie’s wisdom.

Circle of Life

Many people will walk in and out of your life,
But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
To handle yourself, use your head,
To handle others, use your heart,
Anger is only one letter short of danger;
If someone betrays you once, it is his fault
If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.
Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.
He who loses money, loses much;
He who loses a friend, loses much more;
He who loses faith, loses all.
Beautiful young people are accidents of nature,
But beautiful old people are works of art.
Learn from the mistakes of others.
You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.
Friends, you and me.
You brought another friend…
And then we were group…
Our circles of friends.

阅读下文,课后讨论什么是好教师的标准。
Remember teachers
“What teachers do I remember? Well, I remember my first teacher. She seemed so kind and pretty, and she told us such amusing stories.”
We recently asked a large number of people to tell us their memories of their teachers, and people remembered the strangest things.
“I remember an English teacher—he always had coloured socks: red, green, even orange.”
“I remember a maths teacher. She was always dressed very well. I couldn’t stop looking at her. I wanted to be like her.”
People remember the good and the bad, and sometimes feel sorry about their behaviour.
“Our chemistry teacher. He was so strict. We were afraid of him. I don’t think he liked us.”
“The literature teacher was so boring. He could make us fall asleep very quickly.”
“I remember one young teacher. He was very nervous and shy. We were a very bad class: when he turned his back, we all changed seats. He soon stopped teaching.”
Some memories are very warm.
“One year we had a really good Chinese teacher. He was very patient and told very funny jokes. He was popular with all the class. We always worked hard for him. His students are his friends.”
But not all.
“Yes, I have one maths teacher who taught me nothing. He talked about his family. I don’t think he was interested in maths.”
“The P.E. teacher always told me I was stupid. I thought teachers should give encouragement. I am not interested in sport because of him.”
Here are some more memories.
“I had one teacher who always wore the same clothes. In three years I never saw him change.”
“One lady teacher often gave us sweets. I don’t know if that was good or not.”
“I had a lot of respect for the biology teacher. She was very intelligent and organized.”
“I remember two teachers well. One was very energetic, and had a loud voice. The other was very serious, but he really helped me when I had problems at home.”
It seems we remember teachers more for who they are than what they teach.

阅读下面短文,选出正确的答案。
People who argue that good teachers are born and cannot be made, or trained, usually base their view upon the teacher’s personality. They think that with the right personality, training is not necessary; with the wrong personality, training is useless. It seems to me that this is a personal impression.
Obviously, a really weak personality is an unfavourable disqualification(不合格) for teaching. On the other hand, a teacher’s personality that is too powerful may also be a disqualification, because of his or her tendency to rule the classroom situation. He or she may fail to develop personality and individuality(个性) in his or her own students.
However, this consideration of the teacher’s personality, from the point of view of training him or her to teach in a college or university, does not seem to weaken the case for good teacher training. On the contrary, it may strengthen it if the training course includes effective psychological analysis of the classroom situation, and the interaction(合作,一起活动)between teacher’s and student’s personalities.
Then, we must keep in mind that students expect teachers to teach. They value clear statement of problems, and guidance in their solution. Personal qualities of kindness, sympathy and patience are secondary. Students value their teachers mainly for intellectual abilities. Enquiries carried out in England and America over half a century have pointed to this conclusion.
1 The writer believes that ________.
A. teacher training is not necessary for those who have the right personality
B. qualified teachers are born and cannot be made
C. training is always necessary for those who want to become good teachers
D. teacher training is only necessary for those who have not the right personality
2. Why might a strong personality be a weak point to a teacher?
   A. Because the teacher may give too much control in the classroom.
   B. Because the teacher may give too little control in the classroom.
   C. Because the teacher may pay too much attention to student’s needs
   D. Because the teacher may easily get angry with the students.
3. A teacher-training course should include ________.
   A. personality analysis of different kinds of people
   B. personality analysis of different kinds of students
   C. analysis of classroom culture and communication
   D. analysis of the differences between strong and weak personalities
4. The conclusion made by the writer is ________.
   A. teachers’ knowledge and skills are the most important to their students
   B. teachers’ kindness and sympathy are the most valuable to their students
   C. teachers’ motivation and interests in teaching are the most important to their students
   D. teachers’ patience and strong personality are the most valuable to their students

The meaning of teaching
A
A young man wanted to learn how to be a good farmer. He went to a teacher who agreed to help. Every day for a month, he sat by the teacher, who talked about farming for eight hours. The young man was very bored and only listened to half of what the teacher said. At the end of the month, the teacher said, “Now you know all about farming. Go away and be successful.” The young man went home, feeling very disappointed.
The same young man went to another teacher. He was the opposite. He didn’t talk to the boy. The boy sat there for hours. The teacher didn’t look at him, but did his work. The boy became bored and started helping. Every day he worked hard in the fields. Once a week he asked the teacher to teach him, but got no reply. After two months, when he asked, “Will you teach me?”, the teacher spoke, “Yes, one day.” So the young man stopped asking for a few months. Then after a year, he asked again. The teacher looked surprised: “But I have taught you almost everything I know.” The young man though about it and saw it was true—he was now a good farmer.
B
A student didn’t do his homework. The teacher asked, “Why?” “I’m sorry, I forgot.” “But why did you forget?” “It didn’t seem interesting or important,” said the student. “I don’t know what punishment to use,” said the teacher. “Are you going to punish me?” asked the student. “No, the punishment is for me. I have not taught you well,” said the teacher. “Thank you,” said the student. “You are the world’s best teacher. I can never know as much as you, but you have taught me a lot.” “How can I be a good teacher if my students do not know more than me? I will not have succeeded until that happens,” replied the teacher.
C
The music teacher was a strict man. Every day the student played the same piece of music, and the teacher said it was not good and he must practise more. After two years of this, the student left feeling depressed. But when he played it in public, everyone said it was perfect, and he found he could play other pieces easily.

文化背景
阅读下文,进一步了解中西方文化差异。
Western manners are little different from good Chinese manners.
1. Greeting the teacher
If you are in a very large class, it may not be necessary to greet the teacher on arriving, but it is always quite proper if you happen to catch the teacher’s eyes as you enter. In a small class, the teacher will probably notice each one as he arrives, and you should smile and say, Good morning. Dr. Fenn.
2. Coming late
It is bad manners to come late to class. If you are unavoidably (不可避免地) late, an apology should be made to the teacher either at the time or after class.
3. Talking in class
It is bad manners to interrupt(打断) anyone who is speaking. And it is especially rude to the teacher, making it very difficult for him to continue the lesson. It is also bad manners to keep silent when the teacher asks you a question. If you do not know the answer, say so immediately; if you do, give it in a clear voice so that all the class may hear.
4. Looking at other’s work(抄袭他人作业)
One may not agree with the examination system, but at present it is basically the only measure to decide whether a student is qualified in a certain line or not.
5. Laughing at others
It is bad manners to laugh at others’ mistakes or accidents. You can realize why if you think how you feel yourself when laughed at. It is very bad manners to laugh at any unfortunate student who has a peculiarity (独特) of walking or talking or any deformity(不足) of the body. Be friendly.
6. Thinking of others
Good manners are especially important in the library. The general rule is : Do not do anything that might disturb(打扰) your neighbour. Pulling or pushing chairs and stamping your feet are impolite, as well as talking or laughing while others are trying to work.
7. Helping the teacher
It is polite for the students to help the teachers when they see something they can do. Sometimes the blackboard needs to be cleaned, or the door or window closed or opened. Sometimes there are papers to collect or give out. This kind of help is always appreciated.
Answer the questions:
1. Summarize the differences.

Hawking fever hit China
Hawking has left much for Chinese to think about.
British physicist Stephen Hawking, possibly the world’s most famous scientist after Albert Einstein, gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August.
An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. But his continuing efforts in the field of science have made many young people take him as their idol.(偶像)
His books, such as A Brief History of Time (时间简史), become bestsellers in Chinese bookstores. “Hawking helps people expand their horizons and become interested in science,”said Pan Yunhe, president of Zhejiang University.
Indeed, experts don’t think it likely that Hawking’s lectures and profound (深奥的) ideas will be easily understood by the average person. But he has certainly sowed the seeds of science among many young people.
And the “Hawking fever” caused by his visit has made people ask: How can China produce more top scientists like Hawking?
“Nurturing(培养) top scientists will take as much work to change society as to educate the scientists themselves, ”said Zhang Fan. Zhang has studied in the UK since 1999 and will be a sophomore(大学二年级学生) at Trinity College in October.
In Britain, Zhang said, teachers inspire students to have a general understanding of the subjects they are interested in. And they encourage students to develop new ideas, which helps them to nurture their creativity.
In China, the Ministry of Education had encouraged schools to provide quality education to tap(开发) students’ potential(潜力).
“I hope teachers will pay more attention to helping us use our imaginations and solve problems on our own,” Said Lu Jie, a Junior Three student in Sanfan Middle School in Beijng.

B
The World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child's stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes colour and may break out in open sores(疼痛). The hair changes colour and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced.
The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breastfeeding, gave them foods full of starches(淀粉) instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives.
The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease-which has been killing thousands of children for centuries-was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseases. It was the WHO's work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America.
4.From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by ______.
  A. poor living conditions      B .lack of proteins in food
  C. breastfeeding         D. lack of food
5 It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because ______.
  A. it has no symptoms(症状) at all
  B. it is hard to identify signs of it
  C. it doesn't last long enough for careful observation
  D. it is hardly different from other diseases
6 . What is mentioned as a simple but reasonable way of curing this disease?
  A. Taking a special medicine. B. Avoiding any food containing starch.
  C. Having more meat or milk. D. Taking medicines full of proteins.
7 .What's the best title for the article?
