文化背景
My Teacher
Before Annie Sullivan came to our house, one or two people had told
my mother that I was simple-minded. I can understand why. Here was
a seven-year-old girl who at the age of 19 months had become deaf
and blind. And because I was deaf, I could not learn to speak.
Struggling in a world of silence and darkness, I must have appeared
to them to be simple.
But this was before Annie Sullivan came to stay. She was a lively
young woman with patience and imagination. A born teacher, she
thought she could turn a deaf-blind person into a useful human
being. What a difficult case I must have been to this young
teacher! I remember the many times she tried to spell words into my
small hand. But neither words nor letters meant anything to me. I
thought her finger movements were some kind of game. But at last,
one day, she reached my understanding. About a month after her
arrival, she taught me the word water. It happened at the well
where I was holding a jar while Annie pumped. As the water flowed
onto my hand, she kept spelling w-a-t-e-r into my other hand with
her fingers. Suddenly I understood!
It was the first joy I had known for years. I reached out to
Annie’s hand. She understood I was begging for new words, for the
names of the things I touched. The words---so full of
meaning---flew from her hand to mine. Those first words were to
change my world. One of the first things Annie did was to teach me
how to play. I had not laughed since I became deaf. One day she
came into my room laughing happily. Putting my hand on her face,
she spelled l-a-u-g-h. Then she touched me lightly on my arm and
made me burst into laughter. Next Annie took me by the hand and
taught me how to jump. She then immediately spelled the word
j-u-m-p for me. In a few days I was learning—and enjoying it—like
any child. Through my hands and fingers, I “heard” the sounds that
one hears on a farm, the noises made by cows, horses, chickens and
pigs. She also brought me into touch with everything that could be
felt—soil, wood, silk. As I look back upon those years, I am struck
by Annie’s wisdom.

英语活动
Circle of Life
Many people will walk in and out of your life,
But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
To handle yourself, use your head,
To handle others, use your heart,
Anger is only one letter short of danger;
If someone betrays you once, it is his fault
If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.
Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.
He who loses money, loses much;
He who loses a friend, loses much more;
He who loses faith, loses all.
Beautiful young people are accidents of nature,
But beautiful old people are works of art.
Learn from the mistakes of others.
You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.
Friends, you and me.
You brought another friend…
And then we were group…
Our circles of friends.

文化背景
阅读下文,课后讨论什么是好教师的标准。
Remember teachers
“What teachers do I remember? Well, I remember my first teacher.
She seemed so kind and pretty, and she told us such amusing
stories.”
We recently asked a large number of people to tell us their
memories of their teachers, and people remembered the strangest
things.
“I remember an English teacher—he always had coloured socks: red,
green, even orange.”
“I remember a maths teacher. She was always dressed very well. I
couldn’t stop looking at her. I wanted to be like her.”
People remember the good and the bad, and sometimes feel sorry
about their behaviour.
“Our chemistry teacher. He was so strict. We were afraid of him. I
don’t think he liked us.”
“The literature teacher was so boring. He could make us fall asleep
very quickly.”
“I remember one young teacher. He was very nervous and shy. We were
a very bad class: when he turned his back, we all changed seats. He
soon stopped teaching.”
Some memories are very warm.
“One year we had a really good Chinese teacher. He was very patient
and told very funny jokes. He was popular with all the class. We
always worked hard for him. His students are his friends.”
But not all.
“Yes, I have one maths teacher who taught me nothing. He talked
about his family. I don’t think he was interested in maths.”
“The P.E. teacher always told me I was stupid. I thought teachers
should give encouragement. I am not interested in sport because of
him.”
Here are some more memories.
“I had one teacher who always wore the same clothes. In three years
I never saw him change.”
“One lady teacher often gave us sweets. I don’t know if that was
good or not.”
“I had a lot of respect for the biology teacher. She was very
intelligent and organized.”
“I remember two teachers well. One was very energetic, and had a
loud voice. The other was very serious, but he really helped me
when I had problems at home.”
It seems we remember teachers more for who they are than what they
teach.
