Teaching goals:
1. To understand the reading passage by guessing the meaning of some important words and phrases
2. To know what people should do in an earthquake.

Teaching procedures:
Step I Lead-in
T: Good morning, boys and girls. We have learned some kinds of natural disasters . Can you tell me some names? Today we will learn more about natural disasters .It’s about an earthquake in Taiwan.
Step II Discussion   
 1. Listen to the tape first and then read the passage loudly
    2. Answer the following questions in groups.
What was Timmy doing when the earthquake happened?
       How did people feel ?
What did they do in the earthquake? Is it right?
Step II Talking
Ask one student in each group to describe what happened in the earthquake using the answers to the above questions.
Step III Presentation
Listen to the passage again,then read the text one paragraph by one
   1. Answer the questions to help students understand each paragraph
Paragraph 1: where was Timmy when the earthquake started?
           What happened there?
Paragraph 2: what could people hear at that time?
           What did people do?
           What did Timmy do?
Paragraph 3: Where was Timmy when everything stopped?
Paragraph 4: How did he feel?
Paragraph 5：What did Timmy think while he was waiting for help?
Paragraph 6：How was he saved ?
Step IV Exercise
    1.  Ask students to finish Part C and Part D by themselves
    2.  Check the answers together
Step V Thinking
To think about what should people do in an earthquake. They can discuss in groups and make one student talk about their ideas.
