In the marathon event of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, athletes will swim together, get refreshed at various points, make a break for the finish line and then climb onto dry land and take off their goggles (护目镜). Marathon swimming — the term for a 10-kilometer, open-water race — is making its first Olympic appearance, and supporters hope it can attract as much attention as other kinds of marathon.
The rising sport — described as a combination of swimming, water polo (水球) , and cycling for its elements of strategy and physical contact — is quite different from a far-shorter pool race, and that freshness appeals to competitive swimmers and those for fun alike. Carrington Cole, a 36-year-old New Yorker, swam competitively in college but says her pool racing days are over. " I don' t want to compete in the same field," she says. A few years ago, after a friend told her about local open-water swims, she signed up for a 1-mile race in the Hudson River — and got hooked. Since then, she's worked her way up to a nearly 6-mile race. She' s competitive in her age group but says that' s not the point. " It' s a complete source of pleasure and relaxation," she says. " It' s an amazing, fantastic experience to be swimming in the river and to do it as part of a group. You can completely relax and let your head go. "

Have you ever wondered why the roots of the plants always know which way to grow — into the soil but not above it? Some British scientists have recently solved this mystery.
It turns out that roots have special hairs that tie them into the soil and help them grow their way past obstacles, a team at the John Innes Center in Norwich reports in the February 29 issue of Journal Science.
"The key is in the fuzzy (有绒毛的) coat of hairs on the roots of plants," says Professor Liam Dolan. "We have found a growth control system that enables these hairs to find their way and to become longer when their path is clear. "
Root hairs explore the soil in much the same way a person would feel their way in the dark. If they come across an obstacle, they make their way around until they can continue growing in an opening. In the meantime, the plant is held in place as the hairs grip (紧紧抓住) the soil.
The hairs are guided by a clever chemical trick. A protein (蛋白质) at the tip of the root hairs called RHD2 helps them to take calcium (钙) from the soil. Calcium makes the hairs grow, and produce more RHD2, and take more calcium.
But when an obstacle blocks the hair' s path, or the hair reaches the surface of the soil, the cycle is broken and growth starts in another direction.
This system gives plants the flexibility (灵活性) to explore a complex environment and to live in even the most unpromising soils, says Dolan.
In poor soils such as in parts of Australia and Africa, native plants have adapted (适应) by producing enormous numbers of root hairs. A better understanding of this adaptation will allow scientists to develop hairy rooted crops that can grow in unfriendly environments.
According to Dolan, "Research in the John Innes Center is taking a breeding (繁殖) approach to increase hair length in wheat but it will be some time before new cultivars (栽培变种) are developed."
60. The passage is mainly about      .

B. Roots take RHD2 and calcium from the soil and produce RHD2.
C. Roots make hairs grow, and produce RHD2, and take more calcium.
D. RHD2 takes protein, which makes hairs grow, and produce RHD2, and take more calcium.

A. hairy rooted crops can grow better in unfriendly environments
B. a new cultivar of wheat with long hair has been developed by scientists
C. a new cultivar of wheat with long hair is still on test
D. the roots of plants always know which way to grow

Two studies are adding to the debate about the heath risks of eating fish containing high levels of the metal mercury (汞). One study suggests that people who eat fish high in mercury may increase their risk of having a heart attack. Yet another study found no link between mercury and heart disease.
Both studies were published in The New England Journal of Medicine in November.
Mercury is a natural element. Some bodies of water have become polluted with mercury. High levels of the metal have been found in large fish, such as king mackerel, shark and swordfish. Scientists say mercury can be harmful to people. For example, it can harm the developing brain of a fetus or child. So some experts say that pregnant women should avoid eating fish containing high levels of mercury.
However, the American Heart Association and other experts have advised Americans to eat fish at least two times a week. Fish contains important Substances, including omega-three fatty acids. These are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease..
Scientists at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland organized one of the new studies. They examined medical of more than one-thousand-four-hundred men from Israel and eight European countries. They compared men who had suffered a heart attack with healthy men.
The scientists examined mercury levels in the men by studying toenail particles from the men's feet. The study found that mercury levels in the men who had a heart attack were fifteen percent higher than those with no history of heart disease. It also showed that men with the highest mercury levels were about two times more likely to have a heart attack than men with the lowest levels.
However, a study by the Harvard School of Public Health in Cambridge, Massachusetts disputes the findings. The Harvard scientists compared two groups of about five-hundred American men. All the men in one group had suffered a heart attack. The other men showed no evidence of heart disease. The Harvard scientists also examined toenail particles for mercury. They found no link between mercury and the risk of heart disease.
Many doctors say people should not stop eating fish because of concerns about mercury.
64. Which of the statements is incorrect according to the passage?
A. Scientists have never disagreed on the health risk of eating fish containing high levels of the metal mercury.
B. Scientists have been debating upon the health risk of eating fish containing high levels of the metal mercury.
C. Scientists have studied the health problems related to mercury.
D. Some fish contain high levels of mercury
65. Which is NOT the method scientists used in the studies concerning mercury?
A. Examining medical records.        B. Comparing healthy people with unhealthy people.
C. Studying toenail particles from men' s feet.  D. Anatomizing (解剖) fish.
66. The passage implies (暗示) that _____.
A. scientists are more scientific than doctors
B. there are also disputes among doctors on whether to eat fish
C. there aren’t debates among doctors on whether to eat fish
D. scientists do more studies than doctors
67. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that ______.
A. scientists have not agreed on whether to stop eating fish because of concerns about mercury
B. studies suggest that harm has been done to fish
C. the conclusion of the studies by scientists at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health was right
D. the result of the study by the Harvard School of Public Health was right
68. What’s the author’s attitude towards the links between mercury and heart disease?
A. He believes that heart disease has a close connection with mercury.
B. He believes that there' s no link between mercury and heart disease.
C. He doesn’t mention his opinion.
D. He believes that there's no direct link between mercury and heart disease.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in Beijing Wednesday China was making big efforts on tackling(解决) climate change issue, calling for more support from developed countries to developing countries on clean technology transfer.
Blair, who was here on a three-day visit to China, spoke positively of China's efforts on cutting greenhouse gas emission in an interview with Xinhua.
It is significant that China has made regulations on decreasing energy intensity of 20 percent by 2010, Blair told Xinhua, calling it "an ambitious target". Considering the climate change issue "the biggest long-term challenge" the whole world faces at the current stage, Blair said the most challenging job now is how to make sure developing countries could carry on growing and at the same time take action on climate change.
"Countries like China and India should industrialize rapidly without repeating the mistakes we made," he said. urging developed countries to give more financial support on transferring clean technology to developing countries.
"We have got to accept the responsibility of the problems we created and help China, India and other countries to develop in a more sustainable way," Blair said.
On the upcoming Olympics in Beijing, Blair said he believed that China would put on a great Games with fantastic facilities and it would be very exciting to see a success in the Beijing Olympics.
Having confirmed he himself would come back for the event in August, Blair praised Beijing's efforts on trying to make sure the Olympics is an " environmental responsible" one. 第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
下面是某中学生给某报编辑部写的一封信,仔细阅读并就信的内容以编辑的名义给此中学生回一封信。
Dear editor.
I am an active girl, and I speak and laugh loudly in the classroom, like a boy. I don’t care about small matters. On the contrary, my neighbor, the girl who sits next to me, speaks quietly and dare not do the things I often do. I can understand this.
What I can’t stand is that she often gets angry with me about small things. How can I get along with her?
Yours
Sunny,
注意:1).回信需就原信内容给出至少三条建议(如谈心,相互帮助,一起参加各类活动等);
2).词数:100左右。(开头和结尾已经给出,不计入总词数)。

第二节  书面表达(满分25分)参考范文:
Dear Ralph,
I'm a middle school student. I'm writing to tell you my problem which has troubled me for a long time. It is the relationship between my mother and me. My mother is a university professor, who works very hard. She is strict with me,but she is so busy with her work that she finds little time to talk to me. I love her and I do well in my studies, but I still feel a little afraid of her because she loses her temper easily. I don't know how to communicate with her. Maybe it's because we have seldom sat down and exchanged our feelings and thoughts. I hope we can know more about each other and understood each other better. I do hope we'll be closer. What can I do?
  Looking forward to your reply.
  Best wishes!
  Yours sincerely,
Li Xiaohua
