during 4 , and Joey would jump right
in,run and play, too. We 5 told him that
he probably wouldn’t be able to 6 as well as the other
children. So he didn’t know.
In seventh grade he 7 to go out for the
crosscountry team. Every day he 8 with
the team. He worked harder and ran 9 than
any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the 10
that seemed to come naturally to so many others
did not come naturally to him. 11 the entire team runs, only
the top seven runners have the potential (潜能) to 12 points
for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the
team, so he didn’t know.
He13 to run four to five miles a day, every day — even
the day he had a 103degree fever. I was 14 , so I went to
look for him after school. I found him 15
all alone. I asked him how he felt. "Okay," he said. He had two
more16 to go. The sweat ran down his face
and his eyes were glassy from his fever.
17 he looked straight
ahead and kept running.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were 18 .
Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was
in 19 grade — the other
six team members were all eighthgraders. We never told him he
shouldn’t 20 to make the team. We never
told him he couldn’t do it...so he didn’t know. He just did it.

What are the basic elements of good manners? Certainly a strong
sense of justice is one; courtesy is often
36
more than a highly developed sense of fair play.
A friend of mine once told me of
37
along a one-lane(单行道), unpaved mountain road.
38 was another car that produced clouds of
choking
39 ,
and it was a long way to the nearest
40 highway. Suddenly , at a
41 place, the car ahead
pulled off the road. 42
that its owner might have engine trouble, my
friend stopped and asked if anything was wrong."
43 , "said the other
driver. " But you' ve endured my dust this far; I’ll
44 with yours the rest
of the way."
Another
element of courtesy is empathy(善解人意) , a 45
that enables a person to see into the mind or
heart of someone else, to understand the pain
or 46
there and to do something
to minimize it. A man 47
alone in a restaurant was trying to unscrew
(旋松) the cap of a beer bottle,
48 he
couldn't do it because of badly
injured
49 . He asked a young
busboy to help him. The boy took the bottle, turned his back
50
and loosened the cap
without difficulty. Then he
51 it again. Turning back to the man,
he 52
to make great efforts to open the bottle without
success. 53 he took it
into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed
to loosen it — but only with a pair of pliers (钳子).
Yet another component of politeness is the ability to treat all
people
54 , regardless of all status or
importance. 55 when you
have doubts about some people , act as if they are worthy of your
best manners. You may also be astonished to find out that they
really are.
Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

36.A nothing more than相当于only,“只不过”之意。
37.D 后面的the other
put up
而do away with(废除),catch up with(赶上),go on
with(继续)与句意不合。
45.D
故用Even。
joy”。
Mother managed to buy me some more paint and brushes, along with
one or two drawing books and a pencil. This, of
course, broadened my range of expression and
36
me to have a greater
37

uncertainty and awkwardness, I
38
contentedly with my new pastime (消遣). I

I was

clenched(紧握). All my paint and brushes were

get mother or father to pin (钉住)the drawing paper

It looked like a very awkward position, with my head almost
51
my knees and my back as crooked as a corkscrew
(瓶塞钻) , but I painted all my best pictures
52 ,
with the wooden floor as my only easl (画架) . Slowly I began to
recover from my

depression (消沉) . I had a feeling of pure joy while I painted,

I had never experienced before and

seemed almost to lift me above myself.

36.B 动词allow的搭配是allow sb to do,而let的搭配是let sb
out后应接to do,而get down to则应当用doing的形式。
40.A
silent”。
41.B
C项的growing(长大)和improving(改进)与文章没有必然的语境联系。
I found a way to be happy
43.A 总之,(above all)我进入了一种“forget myself”的境地。
44.A
miss(错过)后要用doing的形式。
47.A
close要用close to
50.B keep it steady
用between。
B项the same
way是说“用同一方法作画”C项half way是“半路”,D项in the way则是“碍事,挡道”的意思。
