The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during 4  , and Joey would jump right in,run and play, too. We 5  told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to 6 as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.

Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were 18 . Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in  19  grade — the other six team members were all eighthgraders. 20.

What are the basic elements of good manners? Certainly a strong sense of justice is one; courtesy is often   36   more than a highly developed sense of fair play. A friend of mine once told me of   37  along a one-lane(单行道), unpaved mountain road.  38  was another car that produced clouds of choking   39  , and it was a long way to the nearest  40  highway. Suddenly , at a  41  place, the car ahead pulled off the road.  42  that its owner might have engine trouble, my friend stopped and asked if anything was wrong."  43  , "said the other driver. " But you' ve endured my dust this far; I’ll  44  with yours the rest of the way."

Another element of courtesy is empathy(善解人意) , a  45  that enables a person to see into the mind or heart of someone else, to understand the pain or  46   there and to do something to minimize it. A man   47  alone in a restaurant was trying to unscrew (旋松) the cap of a beer bottle,   48  he couldn't do it because of badly injured   49   . He asked a young busboy to help him. The boy took the bottle, turned his back   50   and loosened the cap without difficulty. Then he   51  it again. Turning back to the man, he   52  to make great efforts to open the bottle without success.  53  he took it into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed to loosen it — but only with a pair of pliers (钳子).

Yet another component of politeness is the ability to treat all people   54  , regardless of all status or importance.  55  when you have doubts about some people , act as if they are worthy of your best manners. You may also be astonished to find out that they really are.

Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

故用Even。

Mother managed to buy me some more paint and brushes, along with one or two drawing books and a pencil. I would sit on the floor for hours, holding   47   between my toes, my right leg curled up (蜷缩的) under my left, my arms held tightly at my sides, hands clenched(紧握). All my paint and brushes were   48   me, and I   49   get mother or father to pin (钉住)the drawing paper to the floor with tacks(大头钉) to keep it   50  . It looked like a very awkward position, with my head almost   51   my knees and my back as crooked as a corkscrew (瓶塞钻) , but I painted all my best pictures   52  , with the wooden floor as my only easl (画架) . Slowly I began to recover from my   53   depression (消沉) . I had a feeling of pure joy while I painted,   54   I had never experienced before and   55   seemed almost to lift me above myself.
