第四节：阅读表达题（共5小题，每小题3分，共15分）

Many parents nowadays tend to have a feeling that schools are no longer interested in spelling. In fact, no school I have taught in so far has ever dropped spelling teaching or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, very different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先) it must be given over other language skills. We have to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with the complexities (复杂) of spelling.

If spelling becomes the only one point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will possibly write only with words which he can spell correctly, choosing to avoid using language he is uncertain about. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to the expression of ideas rather than word spellings and grammar.

At the senior high school level, it is very common to find that children’s writing work is terrible with too many spelling mistakes in it, but it is not the end of the world. It is not wrong for the teacher to draw attention to the mistakes that students have made, but if he cares more about the child’s expression of ideas, the children will have more freedom and courage to improve on his writing.
