Chen Xiexia wins China´s first gold

Chen Xiexia won the first gold medal for the Chinese delegation in women's 48-kilogram weightlifting on Saturday morning. Chen's combined total also set a new Olympic record.

It was a sure-fire win for Chen. She didn't start lifting until 30 minutes into the competition but all six of her attempts were successful.

She snatched 95 kilos before clean and jerking 117 kilos, for a winning total of 212 kilos.

Chen Xiexia said, "What I wanted was to make every attempt and achieve as much as I can. I'm happy to hear I won the first gold for China. It added a new meaning to the medal."

Despite competing on home soil, the medalist was not overwhelmed by the crowd's expectations.

Just four weeks ago, Chen was injured in a training session. But today she was in great form and her rivals did not pose any real threat.

One spectator Ji Lingna said, "She did so well. It was amazing that a girl the same weight as me can lift such a heavy thing. It was really great. Everyone is number one."

Chen Xiexia's early success will be an inspiration to other Chinese athletes and home fans.

Wang Mangmang said, "People love seeing records broken and heroes made. As the athletes lift the heavy barbell, they're also raising the hopes of their countries. And for Chen Xiexia herself, winning the first gold medal for the Chinese delegation at the Beijing Games is a surprising honor."
