Module 5 Newspapers and Magazines

Teaching Plan 1

Teaching aims:

  Enabling the students to

1. know the items of the newspaper and magazine.

   2. know sth about the news in the reading material on Page 43.

Teaching steps:

I. Warming-up.

  Bring some English newspapers to show the students. And ask them to talk about the papers. Ask such questions: Do you like any of them better? Why do you? or Why not?

  Now who can tell me which is the front cover?

  Which is the front page?

  Please turn to page 41. Introduction. Activity 1. Match these words with the numbered items in the illusions of the newspaper and magazine.

  1) article    2) front cover    3) front page    4) headline   5) photograph

  Activity 2. Read these words and divide them into these groups:

A: people who work on newspapers and magazines:

  editor, journalist, photographer

B: types of news items you can find in newspapers and magazines.

  business, celebrity, economy, international, politics, fashion, sport

II. Come to the reading.

  Activity 1: Complete the passage with these words:

  1) astronaut     2) cosmonaut    3) universe    4) taikonaut   5) navigator

  Activity 2. Read the subheadings and predict what the article is about.

  A. Conversations in Space

  B. October 16th, 2003

  C. Congratulations from Around the World

  The news is about China’s first man in space.

  Now listen to the tape and try to find the answers to these questions:

   How many orbits did Yang made of the earth?

   --14.

   Is China the first nation to send a man into space?

   --No, the third nation.

Activity 3. Read the first part of the article and make questions to match the following answers:

  1. Shenzhou V

   What was the name of the capsule?

  2. Jiuquan

   Where did Yang take off from?

  3. 437

   How many people had traveled in space before Yang?

  4. 26,000

   How many days have astronauts spent in space in total?

  Activity 4. Read the article and decide if the sentences are true or false.

   1. The taikonaut was space for twenty-one hours.    (21.5 hours)

   2. One of the astronauts aboard the International Space Station was born in China.

                                     His parents were born in China.

   3. The other man aboard the Space Station is a Russian cosmonaut.   T

   4. China received messages of congratulations from all over the world.   T

   5. Sean O’Keefe works for the United Nations.   from the NASA.

   6. Kofi Annan thought that the flight was very good news just for China.

                              good news for the whole world.

III. Read the passage for some time and try to say something about the news.

IV. Ask some students to speak out and correct the mistakes if any.

V. Homework:

  Read the passage and try to grasp more details.
