hour until I began to feel hungry. It was seven. At that time I was
not far from a favourite restaurant of mine, where I often went to
eat two or three times a week. I knew the owner well.
I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded , and
ordered my meal. While I was waiting, I looked

in the restaurant. At last, he got up and went
into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again,

for his meal and left.

the man had wanted. The owner told me he was a
detective. “Really?” I was

in me. But why?” I asked. “He followed you
because he thought you were a man he was looking

kitchen, he showed me a

of the man. He certainly looked like you! Of
course, since we

Computers can help many workers. They can also help thieves.
There was a thief who worked in a bank in the USA. He paid for
everything he needed by writing a check. Then he told the computer
not to take any money from his account for the checks he wrote. The
bank’s computer did what he said. And it did not take any money
from his bank account. One day the computer broke down. People had
to do the computer’s work. They soon found out what was
happening.
Another thief who worked for a bank saw people filling in
deposit forms(存款单). Many of these people did not know
their account numbers, so they wrote only their names on the forms.
They left the place empty for their account numbers. The thief
wrote his own account numbers in the place. When the computer read
these forms it looked only at the account numbers. It did not look
at the customers’ names. It paid the money on these deposit forms
into the thief’s account.
Then there was a bank worker who told the bank
computer to take ten cents off every customer’s account each month
and put it into his own account. For a long time the bank’s
customers did not notice that they were losing ten cents every
months. But then someone did notice and told the bank. That was the
end of that little game!
No one really knows how much computer crime is costing the
banks, but some people believe it is millions of dollars a
year.

It’s sometimes reported that strange objects have been seen
high up in the sky. These unidentified flying objects
(UFOs不明飞行物) have made a lot of people interested. Some of the
reports about them are difficult to believe, some have been
explained in scientific ways, and others have never been
explained.
It’s not easy to decide whether a report is true or not. One
report of UFOs came from a British plane on its way from New York
to London in 1954. The British plane was flying over an island at
19,000 feet when the captain noticed that something was on their
left and a little lower than their plane. It’s about five miles
away.
“It was not one object but several,” the captain said. “We
saw one large and six smaller objects. I sent out a radio to report
about them and I received the answer that the other planes were
coming out to meet us. Before the planes arrived, the smaller
objects entered the big object. The big object then became smaller
and moved away fast.”

Perhaps
you have been told about some habits which keep a person from
reading fast and have been strongly asked to break the habits which
you might have. Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check
yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions:
1.Do you move your lips when reading silently?
2.Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
3.Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
4.Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once
to break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over
them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are
reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop
them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one
side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then
you will not have a free finger to use in pointing while reading.
If you move your head, place your chin(下巴) in one hand,
and hold your head still. If you read no more than one or two or
three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to
take in more words at each glance(一瞥) as your eyes travel
across the lines of words.
( )36. You may hold your fingers over your
lips while reading so as to ______.
A.hold a piece of paper between them
B. keep yourself from talking to others
C. tell others to be
quiet
D. feel whether your lips move or not
( )37. When your eyes travel
across the lines of words, you need to ______.
A. read the words
carefully
B. look at every word carefully
C. read several words at a
time D. remember every word
( )38. When you read, don’t _______.
A. use your finger to point to
words B. hold your book with
your hands
C. keep your head
still
D. do any of the things above
( )39. When you place your chin in one hand,
you can ____________.
A. rest your head on
it
B. keep your head from moving side to side
C. keep your hand
upward
D. move your head from side to side
( )40. This passage mainly talks about
________.
A.the importance of fast reading B. the bad
habit in writing
C. the ways to read
fast
D. some difficulty in reading fast
