Today, Sunday, I was invited
to English First's Zhongshan Park venue to give the
International business etiquette
talk.
The featured wine of the day
was a refreshing white wine. Since today's
weather was so hot and humid (even in the
classroom as the air conditioning didn't seem to be working), I
thought serving a cold white wine would be more
appropriate. The wine was from Italy's Zonin
winery. The name of the wine was Terre
Palladiane, from the Soave
region. The vintage
was 2006. Again, thanks to
Torres wine company for ponsoring this bottle. (Terre Palladiane
means Palladian Land translated in English.
Palladio was an Italian Architect in the 1500's, and the term
"Palladiane" refers to his particular style of
architecture. Since all of his architecture works
were built in and around Venice, and this Soave
region wine is also
producted from around the Venice area in
north-eastern Italy, so Zonin winery gave this white wine this
appropriate name, from the same region.)
During the talk, I also
introduced a Greek olive oil for the students to
taste. The name of the oil is Ananias Extra
Virgin olive oil. (Ananias is a Greek name and a
person, who appeared in the Christian Bible.) We
tasted this olive oil by dipping French baguette bread 法式面包棒 into
the olive oil that had a little bit of salt
added. In fact, olive oil can always be tasted by
just dipping a piece of bread and add some salt.
For the summer, olive oil is very good for making salad and it is
very healthy as it contains no cholesterol
不含胆固醇.
There seems to be quite a bit of interest
learning about western food and wine. So for EF students, pay
attention to the notice board as I will conduct a table manners
training on 21 June in collaboration with EF.
They will announce the place and fee in the near
future. Alternatively, get in touch with me and I
will give you more details.
Quite a few students raised
some intelligent questions. One was interested to
know what is the proper way to shake hands and when to actively 主动
extend one's hand to shake with a client. Also
we conducted a
role-play exchanging business cards and talked
about how to be a gentlemen in front of ladies.
In another role-play
activity, it seems like not many ladies know how to tie a
tie! I ask if theses ladies ever tie a tie for
their boyfriends or
husbands, no one
knew! Perhaps they can learn
this skill too. At the end of the class, a few
girls came up and asked me privately how to tie the
tie. Perhaps they were too shy to want to
demonstrate in front of the whole class.
Remember, for these etiquette seminars, there is no such
thing as "wrong". We are all in
the classroom to learn.
Don't forget, 玉不琢,不成器 (An
Uncut Gem Does Not Sparkle). We are all here to learn something new
and useful so that we can become valuable.
