1. keep it up:  to continue doing sth 保持, 继续干下去

 keep spirits/strength/morale up: to stay happy, strong,  confident etc, by making an effort 

e.g. We sang as we marched to keep our spirits up.保持士气高昂

If he could keep it up, he would break the world record.

2. Chinese student (is) fitting in well        

在英语标题中, 为了简洁需要, 通常只出现实词,而把虚词、冠词、介词、助动词、连词等略去,省略是英语新闻标题的一大特点。

fit in (well) = get on/ along (well) :   if sb fits in, they are accepted by the other people in a group:

eg: She doesn’t fit in with the rest of the class.

【拓展】:

be fit for  胜任, 适合, 合格

be fit to do sth.   适合做……

fit in with   适应, 适合 

keep fit   保持健康

3. Six months ago, Xie Lei said goodbye to her family and friends in China and boarded a plane for London.

 1) 上(船或别的交通工具)

5. qualification: 资格, 限制, 资历

eg: She   gained a qualification   in marketing/teaching.

qualified: adj having suitable knowledge, experience, or skills, especially for a particular job

eg: There is only one man qualified for the job.

6. be prepared for sth/ to do sth 对某事做好准备

prepare for sth/ to do sth.       为某事做准备

make preparations for sth/ to do sth.  为某事做准备

prepare sb(sth) for sth / to do sth. 使某人对某事做准备

 7. Xie Lei highly recommends it.

1). recommend: to say that sth or sb is good, or suggest them   for a particular purpose or job赞许; 推荐  

eg: He recommended a book to his students.

  Doctors strongly recommend that fathers should be present  at their baby's birth.

require/request/demand 相关名词性从句用should+V原

2). 辨析: highly 和 high

    high表示空间高度, 通常指物;

    highly表示程度, 相当于much

解析:got lost是由“get+过去分词”构成的短语,此处的get为半系动词,,后面的常跟adj或 分词,过去分词居多。类似的还有: get excited,  get married, get hurt, get paid, get dressed, get drunk.

I am a teacher. (一种状态,可延续)

I become a teacher.(侧重动作转化,不延续)

 

I was excited.

I got excited.

11. Living with host families, in which there may be other college students, gives her the chance to learn more about the new culture.

12. It’s a great comfort to have a substitute family to be with.

1). comfort:n[U/C]:舒适,安逸,安慰, 慰藉

         vt: 安慰, 使舒适

eg: My husband was a great comfort to me when my son was ill.

  He spoke a few words of comfort to me before leaving.

I tried to comfort him after he was defeated by his opponent

2) substitute:  n.  代用品, 代替者

  as a substitute 作为代理人/代用品

a substitute for sth.  代替……的人或物

 

eg: Water is not a proper substitute for soft drinks.

The coach substituted Smith for Tom.

They don't like potatoes, so we substitute rice (for potatoes).

13. Xie Lei’s preparation course is helping her to get used to the academic requirements of a Western university.

requirement: n.  必要条件, 要求

eg: Candidates who fail to meet these requirements will not be admitted to the University.

①require与need, want一样, 在表示“需要”之意时, 后接动名词的主动形式表被动意义,相当于不定式的被动语态。

② 后跟从句时应用虚拟语气, 即(should) +动词原形

acknowledge: 承认;确认;公认;答谢

eg: She is acknowledged as the best tennis-player in the world

He is unwilling to acknowledge defeat.

        

 

acknowledge通常指公开承认某事真实情况或自己的过错。
admit强调因外力或良心驱使或经判断而明确承认,多含不情愿或被迫意味。
confess语气较强,着重承认自己意识到的错误或罪行,含坦白忏悔的意味。

 

 

16. Besides, as far as he was concerned

what other people thought was not the most important thing.

另外, 他还说别人的想法不是最重要的事情。

1) besides: prep作“除……之外, 还有”;

There are five other people besides (= in addition to)both of us.

它还可以用作adv, 作“还有, 而且”含有肯定和附加的意思。

I don’t want to go out for a walk. Besides,(=in addition)I’m very hungry.

2). concern:

be concerned with   

be concerned about/for/with

so/as far as sb. is concerned

 

17. He want to know what I thought, which confused me because I thought …

 1. It rained heavily this morning, which made me late for school.
 2.  I came across a tiger yesterday, which was trapped in a cage.

18. Finally he even encourged me to contradict the authors I’d read.

contradict: to disagree with sth, especially by saying that the opposite is true: 反驳, 与 ... 矛盾

eg: Parents just can't bear to be contradicted.

The witness statements contradict each other  and the facts remain unclear.
