9月1日上午，2015级新生开学典礼在F区广场举行，1400多名新生参加了开学典礼。

庄严的国歌奏响，全场起立。随后，吴清辉校长、徐是雄副校长、张聪副校长先后上台发表全英文演讲，给2015级新生上开学“第一课”。吴清辉校长还为获得2015新生入学奖学金（全额）的四位新生颁奖。

吴清辉校长在致辞中说道，“UIC会提供很多选择，但你们要自己选择想要的大学生活。UIC有严格的学术标准，学业并不轻松，梦想容易，但实现梦想不易。”

徐是雄副校长在讲话中寄语新生，想在UIC实现自己的梦想，首先要努力找到自己热爱、擅长的事情，并充分发掘自身的能力和才华。作为博雅大学，UIC将为新生提供和其他大学不同的教育，提供更多的技能和知识帮助学生开阔视野，跳出思维定式。他还提醒新生要通过更好的自我管理过健康生活，建议大家学习UIC的伸柔操来强身健体，学会劳逸结合。

张聪副校长在致辞中表示，UIC将竭尽所能为新生们提供充足的学习和茁壮成长的机会，希望同学们学会独立思考，学会承担责任，尊重他人，多为社群、社会和国家服务。

UIC 迎新这几天恰逢阴雨天。为保障开学典礼顺利举行，工作人员一大早就赶过来擦拭现场座椅上的积水，并准备一旦转换场地需要的设备。幸运的是，上午宝贵的晴天让开学典礼顺利举行。随后，各个学部的新生们也分别与院长和专业老师见面，听取他们的忠告和建议，并听取了全人教育、舍堂文化等的介绍。

这一天，新生们可谓装得满满当当的，而且几乎所有演讲都是全英文的，这也让他们领略到了UIC学习生活的节奏，挑战从第一天就开始了！

Dear students,

It gives me great pleasure to greet all of you here at the Inauguration Ceremonies. On behalf of all UIC faculties and staff I welcome you to join the Family of UIC.

Today marks a new stage of your life which may be very different from what you have experienced in high school. This next phase of life waiting for you is, simply put, “University Life”.

What is the purpose of university education? What is university life? What is, above all, the meaning of life?

I believe in the following years you will find answers to these questions yourself. No one but yourself can provide you the answers. University can provide choices for you but you need to choose your own university life. Professors can give you lectures, as they teach. However they cannot guarantee what you have learnt. No one can learn for you. Life offers you many chances and opportunities. You, nevertheless, are the one who find meaning for and shape your life. In short, you are the author of your life.

UIC is a liberal arts institution. We care for the holistic development of our students. To enable such self-developments, we aim to provide you a caring social environment. The Mentor Caring Programme e.g. is unique at UIC. Around 15 of you will be formed into a group and one teacher will be assigned as your Mentor. One to two senior students will be assigned as your Peer Mentors. They will provide you advice and assistance in all aspects you need help. If they cannot solve your problems they will refer you to other units and resources of the College. This year we open a MCP Centre at the new SHCV to facilitate interactions among mentors, peer mentors and you. I sincerely hope that you can make full use of this channel as taking initiatives and seeking help is among the skills one should first learn at university.

Academic studies have never been easy at UIC. To become a whole person you should also acquire basic knowledge and skills. Highest standards of academic performances are required from every one of you. English is the medium of instruction. You are supposed to speak and write in fluent English now and upon graduation. I hope you will study hard. Without hard work you are not capable to fulfill our goals. To dream is easy, to realize your dream is not.

UIC is celebrating her 10th Anniversary this year. Ten years ago, in 2005, the University was established; we set sail to develop it into the first if not the only liberal arts institution in China. Today I am very pleased to tell you that we have made it. However we are not satisfied with what we have achieved. We will continue to raise ourselves to new horizon and scale new heights. The new Campus in Huitong is the most vivid illustration of our unfailing efforts.

Dear students, this year is also the 70th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World's Anti-Fascist War. You are the young generation, nevertheless, I hope all of you to have adequate understanding of, and hence remember history, cherish peace and serve the humanity. We remember this tragic history because we don’t want it happen again. In this regard, I have the honor of being invited to participate in the memorial military parade ceremony in Beijing the day after tomorrow. I will share with you my impression when I return on a different occasion.

Last but not least, I wish all of you a fruitful journey in UIC. Once again, welcome to UIC!
