莪默絕句甲集譯箋

 

根據愛德華▪菲茨傑拉德《納霞堡莪默▪伽亞謨魯拜集》“RUBÁIYÁT OF OMAR KHAYYÁM OF NAISHÁPÚR”第五版轉譯

 

其一

覺起東君掃夜還,紛紜列宿逝冥關。赫戲萬丈光如箭,正射君王宮闕間。

 

譯箋:東君,英譯原作Sun(太陽)。洪興祖《楚辭補注》:“《博雅》曰:朱名耀靈。東君,日也。《漢書郊祀志》有東君。”〇赫戲,屈原《離騷》“陟陞皇之赫戲兮”,王逸《楚辭章句》:“赫戲,光明貌”。張衡《西京賦》“叛赫戲以煇煌”,李善注:“赫戲,炎盛也。戲,音羲”。〇闕, 英譯原作Turret(塔樓、角樓)。闕之漢義本指古代宮殿、祠廟或陵墓前之高臺,通常左右各一,臺上起樓觀。許慎《說文解字》:“闕,門觀也”。徐鍇曰《說文解字繫傳》:“蓋為二臺於門外,人君作樓觀於上,上圓下方。以其闕然爲道,謂之闕。以其上可遠觀,謂之觀。以其縣法,謂之象魏”。〇參看附錄首版其一及溫譯其二百三十三。

Wake! For the Sun, who scatter'd into flight

The Stars before him from the Field of Night,

Drives Night along with them from Heav'n, and strikes

The Sultán's Turret with a Shaft of Light.

酒肆昏昏侵曙天,忽聞棒喝意茫然。神宮設醮皆齊具,香客何猶閫外眠。

 

譯箋:棒喝,禪宗十一傳至南嶽繫鎮州臨濟義玄慧照禪師以喝叱為機鋒,開示於人。〇宋玉《高唐賦》:“醮諸神。”李善注:“醮,祭也。”〇閫,門檻。揚雄《甘泉賦》:“天閫決兮地垠開。”〇參看溫譯其一。

 

II

Before the phantom of False morning died,

Methought a Voice within the Tavern cried,

    "When all the Temple is prepared within,

"Why nods the drowsy Worshipper outside?"

 

其三

雞聲茅店客來喧,寄日無多當戶言。分袂一朝江海去,悠悠不復返君門。

 

譯箋:唐溫庭筠《商山早行》“晨起動征鐸,客行悲故鄉。雞聲茅店月,人跡板橋霜。”同以羈旅起興。〇是篇意與李白《春夜宴桃李園序》開篇頗類,其云:“夫天地者,萬物之逆旅;光陰者,百代之過客。”大抵皆人生如寄之意。〇參看溫譯其四百八十三。

And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before

The Tavern shouted—"Open then the Door!

"You know how little while we have to stay,

"And, once departed, may return no more."

 

其四

宿願新春又蘖芽,魂思夢慮隱孤笳。但看淑氣神州遍,素手裁成万樹花。

 

譯箋:宿願,英譯原作old Desires。晉陸機《思歸賦序》:“懼兵革未息,宿願有違。”〇淑氣,英譯原作Jesus from the Ground suspires(耶穌自地上嗟嘆)。波斯相傳耶穌復活之法力在彼呼吸之中。〇素手,英譯原作WHITE HAND OF MOSES(摩西素手)。典出《舊約出埃及記》第四章:“(耶和華)又曰,置手于怀,遂置于怀。出之,手乃生癞,其白如雪。又曰,再置手于怀,遂置于怀。出之,手复原,同乎体。”詩中借指一種波斯花,菲氏以爲類於山楂花。〇淑氣,英譯原作耶穌之嘆息,據菲注耶穌治愈之力在其呼吸之中。〇參看溫譯其一百一十六與二百零一。

Now the New Year reviving old Desires,

The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires,

Where the WHITE HAND OF MOSES on the Bough

Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires.

翳林湮滅葬薔薇,照世御杯何所歸。惟覩蒲桃赤瓊灼,千園繞水滿芳菲。

 

譯箋:翳林Iram,據菲注波斯古園名,湮於阿拉伯沙漠之中。〇照世御杯,英譯原作Jamshyd’s Sev’n-ring’d Cup(賈姆什德之七環杯)。賈姆什德,古波斯神話中丕什達德王朝之第四位國君,見菲爾多西《列王紀》。《明史列傳西域四》:“(洪武)二十七年八月帖木兒貢馬二百。其表云:‘.…..欽仰聖心,如照世之杯,使臣心中豁然光明……’照世杯者,其國舊傳有杯光明洞徹,照之可知世事,故云。”〇赤瓊,許慎《說文解字》:“瓊,赤玉也。”今字書猶多沿襲其義。然清段玉裁考證,當是“瓊,亦玉也”之譌,則瓊本非專指赤色之玉。故以赤瓊譯Ruby,亦未嫌義重也。〇赫榮-愛倫云此首為雜擷而成,非任何一首全部或主要部分之翻譯。

Iram indeed is gone with all his Rose,

And Jamshyd's Sev'n-ring'd Cup where no one knows;

    But still a Ruby kindles in the Vine,

And many a Garden by the Water blows.

韓娥已絕繞梁音,淒豔長聼莺嘯吟。佶屈殷勤呼美酒,萎花病頰暈霞侵。

 

譯箋:韓娥,英譯原作David(《聖經》中大衛,《古蘭經》達烏德。能歌善詩,傳《舊約》之《詩篇》爲其所撰)。《列子湯問第五》:“昔韓娥東之齊,匱糧,過雍門,鬻歌假食。既去而餘音繞梁欐,三日不絕,左右以其人弗去。過逆旅,逆旅人辱之。韓娥因曼聲哀哭,一里老幼悲愁,垂涕相對,三日不食。遽而追之。娥還,復爲曼聲長歌,一里老幼喜躍抃舞,弗能自禁,忘向之悲也。乃厚賂發之。故雍門之人至今善歌哭,放娥之遗声。”〇嘯,英譯原作High-piping(尖厲)。《說文解字》:“嘯,吹聲也。”《詩經召南江有汜》“其嘯也歌。”鄭玄箋云:“嘯,蹙口而出聲。”〇佶屈,韓愈《進學解》“周誥殷盤,佶屈聱牙。”馬其昶注:“佶屈聱牙,皆艱澀貌。” 原詩 Pehleví指三至七世紀古代波斯所流行之國語,故以佶屈一詞傳其古奧之義。〇參看溫譯其一百七十四。

春暖邀君酌羽觴,悔尤重襺盡除將。韶光振翮無多路,跂翼時禽欲遠揚。

 

譯箋:酌羽觞,《漢書孝成班倢伃傳》:“酌羽觴兮銷憂。”顏師古注引孟康曰:“羽觴,爵也,作生爵(雀)形,有頭尾羽翼。”〇《論語為政》:“言寡尤,行寡悔,祿在其中矣。”重襺,《說文解字》:“襺,袍衣也。以絮曰襺。”《爾雅釋言》:“袍,襺也。”郭璞注:“《左傳》曰:‘重襺衣裘。’”今本《左氏春秋傳襄公二十一年》作“重繭衣裘。”〇跂翼,《詩經小雅斯干》:“如跂斯翼。”毛傳:“如人之跂竦翼爾。”《爾雅》:“翼,敬也。”清馬瑞辰云:“《傳》云竦翼者,正以竦釋翼,以狀跂立之貌,有似翼然起敬也。”揚,《詩經大雅大明》:“維師尚父,時維鷹揚。”毛傳:“鷹揚,如鷹之飛揚也。”〇赫榮-愛倫云此首為雜擷數篇而成,參看溫譯其四百二十五。

Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring

Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling:

The Bird of Time has but a little way

其八

往復二京安立身,樽中甘苦與誰論。命如莤酒滲將盡,枯葉永飛歸故根。

 

譯箋:往復,《周易泰卦九三爻辭》:“無平不陂,無往不復。”《象》曰:“無往不復,天地際也。”二京,原詩本作納霞堡(Naishápúr,又譯内沙浦爾) 與巴比倫(Babylon)。納霞堡,莪默生地,於今伊朗東部呼羅珊省,時為國之大都會。Babylon,巴比倫王國之都城,位於今伊拉克境内,借指伊斯蘭教中心巴格達。〇莤酒,《左氏春秋傳僖公四年》:“爾貢苞茅不入,王祭不供,無以莤酒。”《說文解字》:“莤,《禮》祭束茅加於祼圭而灌鬯酒,是為莤,像神飲之也。”清段玉裁注:“莤讀為縮,束茅立之,祭前沃酒其上,酒滲下去,若神飲之,故謂之縮。”〇參看溫譯其一百三十四與其三百零九。

Whether at Naishápúr or Babylon,

Whether the Cup with sweet or bitter run,

    The Wine of Life keeps oozing drop by drop,

The Leaves of Life keep falling one by one.

朝花千束日堪摘,昨夕薔薇無處覓。孟夏惟攜群豔來,帝君難老焉能錫。

 

譯箋:《詩經魯頌泮水》:“既飲旨酒,永錫難老。”錫,同賜。〇帝君,英譯原作賈姆什德(Jamshyd)與凱科巴德(Kaikobád),皆傳説中古波斯國王。賈姆什德,參看菲譯其五拙箋。凱科巴德為凱揚王朝創立者,見菲爾多西《列王紀》。〇赫榮-愛倫云此首為雜擷而成,參看溫譯其四百一十四、其四百四十四與其四百八十四。

Each Morn a thousand Roses brings, you say:

Yes, but where leaves the Rose of Yesterday?

    And this first Summer month that brings the Rose

Shall take Jamshyd and Kaikobád away.

祖孫帝業底干卿,父子稱雄一轉睛。但任沙場吼不息,誰趨鼎食與鐘鳴。

 

譯箋:祖孫,原詩作凱科巴德大帝(Kaikobád the Great)與凱霍斯魯(Kaikhosrú)。凱科巴德見菲譯其九拙箋。據菲爾多西《列王紀》,凱科巴德死後傳位長子凱卡烏斯。凱卡烏斯子西亞沃什避難突朗部,入贅駙馬,與突朗公主法蘭吉斯生一子,即凱霍斯魯。凱霍斯魯後回國承繼祖父凱卡烏斯之王位。凱為巴列維語尊稱,義為首領或統治者,凱揚則是凱之複數。後凱揚演變為世間為王者之代稱。波斯史中凱揚靈光即指世間人君所享有之神恩與福佑,與中國所謂真命天子義等。底,何也。馬令《南唐書馮延巳傳》:“延巳有‘風乍起,吹皺一池春水’之句,元宗嘗戯延巳曰:‘吹皺一池春水,干卿何事?’”〇父子,原詩作扎爾(Zál) 與魯斯塔姆(Rustum)。父子皆為凱揚王朝之勇夫,事跡俱見菲爾多西《列王紀》。〇鐘鳴鼎食,張衡《西京賦》:“擊鐘鼎食,,連騎相過。”王勃《滕王閣序》:“閭閻撲地,鍾鳴鼎食之家。”英譯原作Hátim call to Supper(哈蒂姆開筵招客),哈蒂姆乃阿拉伯貴族,以慷慨著稱。〇參看溫譯其六十四與其四百五十五。

Well, let it take them! What have we to do

With Kaikobád the Great, or Kaikhosrú?

    Let Zál and Rustum bluster as they will,

Or Hátim call to Supper--heed not you.

 

其十一

田園荒磧隔漫漫,芳甸橫陳一帶寬。臣主假名渾不記,無愁天子倚金鑾。

 

譯箋:兩端,《中庸》:“執其兩端,用其中於民,其斯以爲舜乎!”〇假名,佛教以爲,諸法為因緣和合而成,無真實之體,故不可自差別,假名僅有差別之諸法,離名則無差別之諸法,故指諸法為假名。鳩摩羅什注《維摩經》:“緣會無實,但假空名耳。”《法華經方便品》:“但以假名字,引導於眾生。”〇無愁天子,《隋書樂志》:“北齊後主自能度曲,嘗倚弦而歌,別采新聲爲無愁曲,自彈胡琵琶而唱之,音韻窈窕,極於哀思。曲終樂闋,莫不隕涕。樂往哀來,竟以亡國。”高緯因自創無愁曲,時人稱之曰無愁天子。英譯原作Mahmúd。瑪赫穆德乃波斯伽玆尼王朝最顯赫之統治者(998-1030年在位),雖為突厥種,亦能以波斯語作詩。此處言Slave and Sultan(臣主)或係指蘇丹瑪赫穆德與其寵臣、將軍埃亞茲,埃本為奴僕。

With me along the strip of Herbage strown

That just divides the desert from the sown,

    Where name of Slave and Sultan is forgot—

And Peace to Mahmúd on his golden Throne!

A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,

A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou

    Beside me singing in the Wilderness—

或謂榮華此世奇,或求遐擧夢瑤池。花開堪折直須折,遠鼓鼉鳴那復知。

 

譯箋:瑤池,英譯原作the Prophet's Paradise(先知之樂園)。先知,指穆罕默德。《穆天子傳》卷三:“乙丑,天子觴西王母於瑤池之上。”唐李商隱《瑤池》:“瑤池阿母綺窗開,黃竹歌聲動地哀。”〇唐杜秋娘《金縷衣》:“勸君莫惜金縷衣,勸君惜取少年時。花開堪折直須折,莫待無花空折枝。”〇陸佃《埤雅釋魚》引晉安《海物記》:“鼉宵鳴如桴鼓,亦或謂之鼉更;更則以其聲逢逢然如鼓,而又善夜鳴,其數應更故也。”《李斯谏逐客书》:“树灵鼍之鼓。”菲注謂鼓指王宮外之鼓。〇參看溫譯其一百零八、其一百八十四與其九十四。

Some for the Glories of This World; and some

Sigh for the Prophet's Paradise to come;

    Ah, take the Cash, and let the Credit go,

環眸四際盡薔薇,鬧罷紅塵笑語歸。旦暮看余繡囊裂,奇珍園囿散霏霏。

 

譯箋:《詩經小雅采薇》:“今我来思,雨雪霏霏。”毛傳:“霏霏,甚也。”〇菲注謂後二句狀薔薇之金色花蕊。

Look to the blowing Rose about us—"Lo,

Laughing," she says, "into the world I blow,

    "At once the silken tassel of my Purse

"Tear, and its Treasure on the Garden throw."

或持金粟惜如珠,或任風抛雨委輸。死化丹砂同不得,封塋誰復掘泥污。

 

譯箋:丹砂,英譯原作aureate Earth(金色之土)。《周易參同契》:“丹砂木精,得金乃並。金水合處,木火爲侶。”東晉干寶《搜神記》:“臨汜縣有廖氏,世老壽。後移居,子孫輒殘折。他人居其故宅,復累世壽。乃知是宅所爲,不知何故。疑井水赤,乃掘井左右,得古人埋丹砂數十斛。丹汁入井,是以飲水而得壽。”〇參看溫譯其一百七十五。

And those who husbanded the Golden grain,

And those who flung it to the winds like Rain,

    Alike to no such aureate Earth are turn'd

As, buried once, Men want dug up again.

心牽塵慮世間情,旋滅死灰旋復生。如鬬玉龍沙磧雪,須臾熠燿即遄行。

The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts upon

Turns Ashes—or it prospers; and anon,

    Like Snow upon the Desert's dusty Face,

Lighting a little hour or two—is gone.

逆旅千年看弊穿,陰陽遞轉戶樞圜。列王隆貴今安在,時命相追鶴馭煙。

 

譯箋:《聖經利未記》第二十五章:“田畝屬我,汝乃賓旅,不得永鬻於人。”《歷代志上》第二十九章:“我儕在爾前,為遠人,為羈旅,同於列祖,在世之日如影,無永存之希望。”《彼得前書》第二章:“愛友乎!爾若客旅,若寄居,我勸爾戒形軀之欲,即攻爾心者也。”唐李白《春夜宴桃李園序》:“夫天地者,萬物之逆旅;光陰者,百代之過客。”其義與此章同。諸如Tavern,Caravanserai皆莪默習用之意象。〇陰陽,英譯原作Night and Day(晝夜),然其義當非限於日夜一科,故易以陰陽。圜轉,《漢書梅福傳》:“從諫若轉圜。”唐顏師古注:“轉圜,言其順易也。”戶樞,《呂氏春秋盡數》:“流水不腐,戶樞不螻,動也。”隆貴,英譯原作Pomp(壯觀)。《史記叔孫通列傳》:“於是高帝曰:‘吾迺今日知為皇帝之貴也。’”鶴馭煙,吳融《和皮博士赴上京觀中修靈齋》詩:“鶴馭已從煙際下。”鶴馭,死之諱稱。〇參看溫譯其七十。

Think, in this batter'd Caravanserai

Whose Portals are alternate Night and Day,

    How Sultán after Sultán with his Pomp

Abode his destined Hour, and went his way.

野驢馳踐羿王元,猶夢黃粱伏草宛。英主深宮曾醉臥,雄獅巨蜥守無言。

 

譯箋:羿王,《說文解字》:“羿,羽之幵風。亦古諸侯也。一曰射師。”拙譯取射師之義。英譯原作Bahrám, that great Hunter(偉大獵手巴赫拉姆),指古波斯薩珊王朝第十任君主巴赫拉姆·古爾(273-276年在位),以勇力稱,熱衷狩獵。見菲爾多西《列王紀》。元,《孟子滕文公下》:“勇士不忘喪其元。”趙岐注:“元,首也。”《左氏春秋傳僖公三十三年》:“狄人歸其元,面如生。”杜預注:“元,首。”〇黃粱,見唐沈既濟《枕中記》。宛,音冤。《說文解字》:“宛,屈艸自覆也。”〇英主,英譯原作Jamshyd(賈姆什德),參見其五與其九。〇參看溫譯其七十二。

薔薇何處最紅妍,凱撒王陵喋血殷。風信飄園如落帽,自誰螓首墮華鬘。

 

譯箋:《春秋左氏傳成公二年》:“左輪朱殷。”杜預注:“今人謂赤黑色為殷。”〇風信,原詩Hyacinth,花名。落帽,《晉書孟嘉傳》:“九月九日,(桓)溫燕龍山,僚佐畢集。時佐吏並著戎服,有風至,吹嘉帽墮落,嘉不之覺。”〇螓首,《詩經衛風碩人》:“螓首蛾眉。”毛傳:“螓首,顙廣而方。”鄭玄箋:“螓,謂蜻蜻也。”《爾雅釋蟲》:“蚻,蜻蜻”郭璞注:“如蟬而小,《方言》云:‘有文者謂之螓。’”華鬘,印度風俗男女多以花結貫飾首或身,謂之俱蘇摩摩羅Kusumamala,因而以為莊嚴佛前之具。《西域記二》曰:“首冠華鬘,身佩瓔珞。”《守護國界經》曰:“以種種寶,用作華鬘,而為莊嚴。”白居易《遊悟真寺》:“疊霜為袈裟,貫雹為華鬘。”〇參看溫譯其一百零四。

I sometimes think that never blows so red

The Rose as where some buried Cæsar bled;

    That every Hyacinth the Garden wears

Dropt in her Lap from some once lovely Head.

輕臥河漘覆碧茸,甦生芳甸正芃芃。麝香暗吐誰家女,教惜櫻唇一點紅。

 

譯箋:河滣,《詩經魏風伐檀》:“寘之河之漘兮。”《說文解字》:“漘,水厓也。” 茸,草初生柔細貌。《說文解字》:“茸,艸茸茸皃。”〇芃,《說文解字》:“芃,艸盛皃。”《詩經鄘風載馳》:“我行其野,芃芃其麥。”毛傳:“願行衛之野,麥芃芃然方盛長。”《詩經曹風下泉》:“芃芃黍苗,陰雨膏之。”毛傳:“芃芃,美貌。”〇借用蘇軾《蝶戀花》:“帳底吹笙香吐麝。”《文選》漢王延壽《魯靈光殿賦》:“發秀吐榮。”吐,有化生之意,故以譯spring。〇參看溫譯其六十二。

And this reviving Herb whose tender Green

Fledges the River-Lip on which we lean—

    Ah, lean upon it lightly! for who knows

From what once lovely Lip it springs unseen!

 

其二十一

命酌同心盡此朝,後憂前悔泯然消。己身明日將何在,當化池灰作劫燒。

 

譯箋:酌,《說文解字》:“酌,盛酒行觴也。”同心,《周易繋辭上》:“君子之道,或出或處,或默或語。二人同心,其利斷金。同心之言,其臭如蘭。”〇王安石《傷仲永》:“泯然衆人。”〇《高僧傳竺法蘭》:“昔漢武穿昆明池底,得黑灰,以問東方朔。朔云:‘不知,可問西域胡人。’後法蘭既至,衆人追以問之。蘭云:‘世界終盡,劫火洞燒,此灰是也。’”劫,梵文Kalpa,為梵語劫波之音略。譯言分別時節。通常年月日時不能算之遠大時節也,故又譯大時。原詩 Yesterday's Sev'n thousand Years,蓋古波斯以為世界之壽為七千歲。菲注謂每一星掌一千年。〇參看溫譯其三百一十二。

Ah, my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears

TO-DAY of past Regrets and future Fears:

    To-morrow!—Why, To-morrow I may be

Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n thousand Years.

 

其二十二

江山歷代有才人,醇酒能醅幾日新。換盞推杯數巡後,山阿托體藉橫陳。

 

譯箋:清趙翼《論詩絕句》:“李杜詩篇萬口傳,至今已覺不新鮮。江山代有才人出,各領風騷數百年。”趙詩末二句言人才代有,以明潮流無常之意,而莪默則言歷史舞臺之上才人但如過客,終歸寂滅。二者用意不同。〇原詩本言世人所愛之一干才人,皆如從所獲蒲桃中軋出之精髓,喻皆為時代所造就也。〇陶淵明《挽詩》:“死去何所道,托體同山阿。”〇參看溫譯其二百一十九。

For some we loved, the loveliest and the best

That from his Vintage rolling Time hath prest,

    Have drunk their Cup a Round or two before,

And one by one crept silently to rest.

椒房金屋樂無垠,夏日穠芳衣著新。終藉黃泉下冷土,己身又為藉何人。

萬千憂懼黯銷魂,黑帳壓城如黑雲。天祐聖王拔劍起,一麾江海散愁軍。

 

譯箋:江淹《別賦》:“黯然銷魂者,唯別而已矣。”〇李賀《雁門太守行》:“黑雲壓城城欲摧”。黑帳,原譯black Horde。Horde,指遊牧民族之帳篷。中國蒙藏民族亦有以帳篷顔色區分部落之習俗,藏族史詩《格薩爾王》中即有黑帳汗。菲注謂暗喻瑪赫穆德征伐印度及其黑人部隊。Misbelieving,乃指異族之非伊斯蘭信仰,此未譯。〇聖王,原文The mighty Mahmúd,瑪赫穆德乃古波斯伽玆尼王朝國王。《三國志徐邈傳》:“酒清者爲聖人,濁者爲賢人。”原註以爲此處莪默以瑪赫穆德王喻酒,蓋酒可消愁。〇杜牧《將赴吳興登樂游原》“欲把一麾江海去,樂遊原上望昭陵。”此借其語。〇參看溫譯其二百零三。

The mighty Mahmúd, Allah-breathing Lord,

That all the misbelieving and black Horde

    Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul

Scatters before him with his whirlwind Sword.

Why, be this Juice the growth of God, who dare

Blaspheme the twisted tendril as a Snare?

    A Blessing, we should use it, should we not?

Scared by some After-reckoning ta'en on trust,

Oh threats of Hell and Hopes of Paradise!

One thing at least is certain--This Life flies;

柔荑巧運灑洋洋,書罷焉能刪半行。齋絜靈機皆枉用,滂沱涕泗亦徒傷。

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,

Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit

    Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,

Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

昊天如簋覆群生,六道輪迴伏楅衡。舉手何須籲其祐,其如兀者亦難行。

 

譯箋:此首之天指自然天穹。《詩經魯頌閟宮》:“秋而載嘗,夏而楅衡。”許慎《說文解字》:“楅,以木有所畐束也。衡,牛觸橫大木。”〇六道,又稱六趣。地獄,餓鬼,畜生,阿修羅,人間,天上是也。此六者,乃眾生輪迴之道途,故曰六道。眾生各乘因業而趣之,故謂之六趣。就佛理言,天亦六道之一,未出輪回,人禱之,彼故無應宜矣。此雖非莪默信奉之義理,聊作譬況似亦無不可。〇《莊子德充符》:“魯有兀者叔山無趾,踵見仲尼。仲尼曰:無趾,兀者也。”〇參看溫譯其四百零八與其九十六。

And that inverted Bowl they call the Sky,

Whereunder crawling coop'd we live and die,

    Lift not your hands to It for help--for It

As impotently moves as you or I.

With Earth's first Clay They did the Last Man knead,

And there of the Last Harvest sow'd the Seed:

馱星天馬燿雙肩,征轡漫漫發紫垣。此命應尋靈土去,蒲桃根畔共纏綿。

I tell you this—When, started from the Goal,

Over the flaming shoulders of the Foal

    Of Heav'n, Parwin and Mushtari they flung,

蒲桃根畔結長緣,且任游僧笑欲顛。磨鑰自開琳舘入,但聞門外吼聲連。

 

LXXVI

The Vine had struck a fibre: which about

If clings my Being--let the Dervish flout;

    Of my Base metal may be filed a Key

That shall unlock the Door he howls without.

且任真光化愛憫,抑成怒火焚身盡。殿中終是滅無痕,但捉歌筵影一瞬。

And this I know: whether the one True Light

Kindle to Love, or Wrath-consume me quite,

A conscious Something to resent the yoke

    Of unpermitted Pleasure, under pain

既摶賤質造元元,復設毒蟲藏樂園。按罪黥刑汝皆宥,人予汝宥亦無言。

After a momentary silence spake

Some Vessel of a more ungainly Make;

    "They sneer at me for leaning all awry:

蘇菲小甕發霆雷,鼓舌滔滔驚四維。陶器陶人莫煩絮,汝知彼等竟為誰。

 

譯箋:蘇菲,本阿拉伯語,意為“穿粗毛衫者”。伊斯蘭蘇菲教派,崇尚苦行克己,因該派信徒皆着粗毛衫而得名。〇《新約羅馬書》第九章:“陶人豈無權於泥,由一團而造器,一為尊,一為卑乎。”

Whereat some one of the loquacious Lot—

I think a Súfi pipkin—waxing hot—

    "All this of Pot and Potter—Tell me, then,

Who is the Potter, pray, and who the Pot?"
