1.Think about what you want to make. If possible, take a pad
and pencil with you when you go places so that you can write down
ideas.
2.A
great way to get ideas is to ask others in your household about
daily problems they face and recording their
feedback.
3.Once
you have several ideas, look through them and decide which one(s)
to build. Start with one that isn't too hard to make, with
easy-to-get materials.
4.Sketch
your invention, using as many sketches as you want and any labels
or notes you'd like it to have. If you plan on it working,
don't forget to sketch in the inside. Remember to list the
materials you need!
5.Think
about how it will work. An idea is fine, but unless you know
how it works, you cannot invent it.
6.Get
your materials. Go to shops like Home Depot or Radio Shack to
get what you need for your invention. If none of the stores you can
think of have what you need (don't rule out WalMart!), try eBay or
Amazon.
Sometimes, the materials can inspire the invention. Go to a garage
sale and see what you find there. What else could it become? The
new purpose doesn't have to be anything like the original
purpose.
7.Get
some tools. If you are using anything potentially dangerous,
get your parents' help.
8.Figure
out a good time to put your invention together. Mom or Dad
might need to be there, so don't forget to ask them if one of them
is free when you plan on putting it together.
9.Only
you know exactly how to put your invention together. Make sure
you have everything, and go ahead and get started. If glue needs to
dry or something like that, don't make the adult that helped you
sit around if they have things to do. Just make sure they
understand when they need to get back and help again.
