Earlier this year, there was a spell when all you could see coming down the autumn catwalks was a sea of black, which boded for a pretty depressing winter ahead!

Luckily, there was plenty of fantasy afoot as well, and in particular some powerful ideas about armour and protection which produced a few amazingly romantic pieces - like the forbidding jeans and vests studded with nails in Gareth Pugh's debut menswear show, or the awesomely heavy-looking chain mail that figured in Asger Juel Larsen's graduate collection.

The ones that stick out in my mind the most were the breathtaking tunics that closed Ioannis Dimitrousis' London show in February: bristling with what looked - and sounded - like thousands of needles, they seemed to take on a glittering life of their own as the models moved down the runway. More fun than a black suit, anyday…
