The Eskenazi family business was founded in
Milan in 1925 and today the company enjoys a distinguished
international reputation as one of the leading names in the field
of Oriental art. Giuseppe Eskenazi, born 1939,
first expressed an interest in this field at the age of seventeen,
encouraged by his uncle Vittorio who had joined the Milan firm
shortly after its inception and had acquired an invaluable wealth
of knowledge and experience. In 1952 Giuseppe
Eskenazi came to school in England, moving to
London in 1958 where he continued his studies at University College
and also sought fine examples of Chinese and Japanese art for the
Milan gallery.
In 1960, together with his father, Giuseppe
Eskenazi opened a London office on the sixth floor
of Foxglove House in Piccadilly, primarily to organise the supply
of works of art to the gallery in Milan. After the death of his
father in 1967, Giuseppe took sole charge of the London office
which now equalled the Milan company in importance. Two years later
he was joined by Luigi Bandini, who already had spent a year
working with the gallery in Milan. Luigi was specifically
interested in Japanese art, in particular netsuke and inro, and by
1976 he had taken over the running of the Japanese department and
was recognised as one of the foremost specialists in this field.
Following the death of Luigi in 1996, the Japanese department was
reorganised in 1999 and now only deals in important screens and
porcelain.
In 1972, the success of Eskenazi Limited prompted
a move to the first floor of Foxglove House and this elegant new
gallery was designed by John Prizeman, a past president of the
Architectural Association. The same year, Philip Constantinidi
joined the company as assistant to Giuseppe
Eskenazi. His invaluable expertise has proved
vital to the development of the Chinese Department.
By the mid-1970s Eskenazi Limited had become a
leading force in its field and in 1975 the London gallery expanded
again, taking over the first floor of the adjacent building to
create a gallery space of some 3,000 square feet. In 1993 the firm
moved to magnificent premises at 10 Clifford Street, just off Bond
Street, now considered to be one of the finest gallery spaces in
London. The interior of this attractive six-storey redbrick
building in the late 19th century Flemish Rennaissance style has
been redesigned by Jon Bannenberg in association with the
architects M.R. Partnership. This prestigious gallery has two
floors of exhibition space as well as offices and a reference
library.
Over the years, clients have included over seventy museums and
institutions from all over the world. In America alone, such
distinguished museums as the Art Institute of Chicago, the
Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kimbell Museum of Art, Fort Worth, the
Los Angeles County Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington D.C., have all
acquired works of art from Eskenazi. Other
institutions include the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert
Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the Musée Guimet in Paris,
the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the National Museum in Tokyo. The
list of internationally important private collectors who have made
acquisitions through Eskenazi is equally
impressive.
Eskenazi’s exhibitions are renowned and have
included Chinese ceramics from the Cottle collection, Ancient
Chinese Bronzes from the Stoclet and Wessén collections, Chinese
works of art from the J.M.A.J. Dawson collection, Chinese and
Korean art from the collections of Dr. Franco Vannotti, Hans Popper
and others, Chinese art from the Reach family collection and
ancient Chinese sculpture from the Alsdorf collection. In 1995 the
gallery hosted the loan exhibition Adornment for Eternity from the
Denver Art Museum, a particular honour since this was the only
European venue for this internationally touring exhibition. Notable
collections of Japanese art which have been handled by
Eskenazi include Japanese netsuke and inro from
the collection of Professor and Mrs. John Hull Grundy, Japanese
lacquer-ware from the Verbrugge collection and Japanese lacquer
from the famous Charles A. Greenfield collection.
Eskenazi is well known for the scholarly
publications that accompany the exhibitions and many of these are
now collectors’ items in their own right.
In March 1997 Eskenazi held an exhibition in New
York, the first ever to be staged by the gallery outside the London
premises. This was largely due to the prompting of Giuseppe’s
son, Daniel, who joined the company in 1993. The positive response
from so many museums and collectors has ensured that this is now an
annual Spring event. In millennium year the gallery celebrated, not
only the new century but also the 40th anniversary of the opening
of the gallery in London, with a remarkable exhibition entitled
Masterpieces from ancient China which focused on just ten superb
bronze works of art. This landmark exhibition, which was shown in
both New York and London, met with resounding success confirming
that the name of Eskenazi has become synonymous
with the most prestigious Oriental works of art.
