Building brands without mass media
Its hard for me to believe to build a brand without mass media,
after read this paper and Google on the internet,
I know more about branding.
To be honest,
I think only few brands can be built totally without mass media.
To build a brand,
we should use more ways:
mass media,
customers’ experiences,
clarify brand's identity,
brand’s visibility...
Traditional mass media (television)
has its own problems:
cost lots of money,
the distance between senior managers and the ads agency.
First problem is so obviously.
For example: in Chinese Spring Festival,
if you want put a 15seconds adv on CCTV,
you should pay 5,980,000RMB
(about $800,000).
Clarify your brand's identity and exposure creates visibility.
Body shop and Haagen-Dazs are really good examples,
I want talk about Samsung,
10 years ago,
Samsung was a low-end electronics manufacturer,
in 1998,
Samsung owed over 170 billion U.S. dollars
.but, in 2004,
sumsung electronics had $55,200,000,000 sales.
In 2005,
Samsung brand was the top 20 value brand in the world.
So how Samsung
can do this?
10years ago,
they have many low-end brands,
but their chairman cut some brand,
just keep Samsung for its' core brand.
Gave the brand a new identify: high-end digital products.
They put more value on Samsung brand :a leader in digital technology, high quality, fashion.(same like Swatch).they connect peoples' need ,fashion
and technology together,
they have the first videophone, the first MP3 phone, the first camera phone.....new technique,
new ideas can keep a brand be a leader.
Involve the customer in brand-building experiences.
I’d like talk about Apple store.
I like the experience place in Apple store,
they have all the iPod,
Mac book, iPhone,
even you will not buy something,
and you can try.
You can directly feel every of their products.
This experience directly connected with customs .although they didn't buy any thing,
the brand can gather more potential customers,
some of them will
become their loyal customs.
This paper mentions something,
now I think
is important and common:
support a invent
(sports,TVshow,music concert give some customs privilege and use Internet. Internet is a lower cost way to branding. Internet is more open than TV,
and make a fast word-of-mouth spread.
This is a new lesson for me,
I know more way to branding,
and this paper makes me curious about some famous companies.So I know about Samsung’s story and some Apple's story.
