IV.             Liu Xiang becomes World Champion

A.    In 2000, he takes 3^rd place in the World-Indoor Championships in France.

1.  Six men compete in the finals.  He is in the 5^th lane.  In the 6^th lane, an American competitor fell down.  There was no official time for Liu Xiang because the officials assumed it was Liu Xiang that fell down.

B.     In 2001 at the age of 18, he won the World University Games in the 110 Meter Hurdles.

C.     In 2002, he broke the Youth World Record.

D.    In 2004, he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

1.      He tied the world record.

2.      He remembers the insult of the 2000 World-Indoor Championships and says to the media, “Who’s to say that Asian people cannot win the gold medal in the Olympics.  Now I have proven it to the world.  I am the champion.”

E.     In 2006, Liu Xiang broke the world record.

1.      Liu Xiang’s world record is 12.88 seconds.

Conclusion

I.                   Because Liu Xiang has dominated in track and field, a sport which never had Asian champions before, he has become a hero to the entire continent of Asia.

A.    Time Magazine had him on the cover, proclaiming him “Hero of Asia”.

II.                Watch for Liu Xiang to win gold in this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
