Agatha Christie, known as the “Queen of Crime”, was one of the greatest mystery writers of the 20th century and she was a mystery herself.
Her novels under the name Mary Westmacott have sold over four billion copies, and the “Guinness Book of Records” lists her as the best selling author of all time. Only the Bible has sold more copies. While her career advanced smoothly and steadily, her personal life, however, was another story. Christie married Archibald Christie around 1920, and, for a while it seemed like a good match. However, six years after the wedding, Archibald suddenly admitted to Agatha that he was having an affair.
The couple quarreled, Archibald went back to his lover and around 9:45 PM on December 8, 1926, Agatha kissed her sleeping daughter Rosalind goodnight, left a note saying that she was going away and even gave  details of her trip. She also sent a note to the local Police indicating that something curious was going on and she had concerns for her own safety. The next day, her car, a Morris Cowley, was found at the bottom of a slope at Newlands Corner, her belongings and identification lying around the car. Ponds were dredged(), and, for the first time in history, were used in the search, and even Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was called in to assist with the investigation.
Of course, her husband Archie was instantly held suspect, and watched twenty four hours a day. A reward was offered for any information in her disappearance. Eleven days later, the Hydropathic Hotel in Harrowgate informed the authorities that a woman, matching Christie’s description was staying at the hotel under the name Teresa Neele, the same name as her husband’s lover. When Archie went there to identify her she didn’t recognize him, and totally rejected the idea that she was a famous author. She later claimed that she had no memory of her trip or how she got to the hotel.
After the disappearance and the lack of an explanation, several theories arose. Some believed that she truly had amnesia, resulting from some sort of breakdown due to her husband’s affair. Others believed that it was a publicity stunt, or an attempt to embarrass her husband, knowing full well that he would be suspected of foul play. Whatever the reason she disappeared, it was never revealed to anyone’s satisfaction by Christie, who later remarried an archeologist and continued to write.

B
K: Adam Kimmel
B: David Blaine
K: I want to start off talking about our shark trip because I think that was the scariest and most life-threatening experience.
B: No, it wasn’t.
K: It was for me, and I wasn’t even in the water. It was enough just being on the boat watching these sharks circle around all day long, while you were 35 feet below the surface with no tank and no mask. I was really scared.  These are great white sharks, and we’re in the middle of nowhere! How did you first _________?
B: I went on a trip with a bunch of scientists to that same spot by Guadalupe Island in the middle of the Pacific in 2007. We were in cages. But at the very end of that dive, I quickly jumped out of the cage. Bob Talbot was with me, so he got one minute of film of me outside of the cage with the great whites. Everyone on that trip got freaked out that I did that, and that was the end of the trip. But it was my dream to go back and do it again. The reason is because I think great whites are the most beautiful and perfect creatures I’ve ever seen.
K: But in your mind, weren’t you wondering if it was safe?
B: I think it depends on your position. If you’re in the water and your head is up and you’re alert and controlled and not afraid, I don’t think they want to bother you. I think they minimize their workload, so if they have to do any work to attack someone, they’ll probably go for easier prey.
KIMMEL: You told me it’s the sharks that come from underneath that you really have to worry about. Swimming above them, which you did, is the most compromising situation.
BLAINE: I think usually they come up out of nowhere and just hit you from below. That’s the way that they normally do it.
55. What’s the relationship between Blaine and Kimmel?
   A. Coach and diver.                     B. Zookeeper and scientist.
   C. Interviewee and interviewer.          D. Director and actor
56. The unfinished question in the blank(in para. 3) can be completed as follows ______.
   A. “explore the Guadalupe Island?”
   B. “get the idea to swim with sharks?”
   C. “find sharks are the perfect creatures?”
   D. “fall out the cage for dive accidentally?”
57. It can be inferred from the underlined part that Blaine is ______.
   A. humorous           B. brilliant         C. fashionable     D. considerate
58. Why does Blaine sometimes choose to swim above sharks?
   A. Out of habit.                       B. Out of curiosity.
   C. For taking photos.                  D. For safety reasons.

Last year, I was admitted into the E.O./M.I.T. Entrepreneurial Masters Program. The first session focused on employees, culture and communication. Our goal was to take the systems we learned in class and implement them in our respective companies over the next 12 months. I’ve recently returned from the program’s second annual session where we evaluated our performance.
The first thing I did when I returned a year ago was to hold a team retreat at which we agreed upon seven core values on which the company would operate. We posted these core values on the wall, and we agreed to adhere to them on a daily basis. In addition, we created awards to honor team members who constantly demonstrate these values.
There is a box located in our team room area for members to nominate(提名) someone for representing a core value during a given week. Our intern, David, collects the nominations and announces them to the entire company every Friday during our team meeting. At the end of the quarter, the person who has the most nominations for each core value gets a financial bonus, and his or her name goes up on the wall for the quarter. In addition, we have an overall award given to the team member who receives the most nominations across the board. The awards have given us extra incentive to help each other and to show our appreciation for superior service. But it also did something else. It made it more obvious who is and who isn’t a good fit for the company.
The good news is that people evaluated each other fairly. However, while most of the team scored extremely high on each value, not everyone passed. In fact, one employee — despite a self-rating of 10 for teamwork, and despite receiving high marks in other categories — received very low teamwork scores.
I recognized the problem immediately. This was an employee who complained frequently without offering solutions. It became clear to me that this person was not a good “fit” with the rest of the team. I tallied all of the feedback and reviewed the scores with each person individually. As a result of our new evaluation process, I ended up losing two team members (the good news is that they realized it themselves). But we brought on new members who fit better, and I think this is something I will keep doing on a quarterly basis, although some of my classmates are doing it in a different way.
59. The seven core values are put forward based on ______.
   A. the writer’s concept                 B. the systems learn in the program
   C. the decisions of team meeting        D. numbers of awards
60. What is the theme of this passage?
   A. Value of team spirit.                 B. Discussion about team work
   C. Operation of company management.  D. Experiment on a new evaluation system
61. The writer of this passage aims to recommend an approach to ______.
   A. figuring out employees who stand out in the team
   B. firing some employees unfit for the company
   C. distinguishing between nominations and rating
   D. strengthening employees’ teamwork spirit
62. What will the author most probably present in the following paragraph?
   A. The performance of his classmates.
   B. The improvement of the evaluation system.
   C. The failure of his business administration.
   D. The contribution of the new members.

A lake in Argentina's remote, inhospitable northwest may offer clues on how life got started on Earth and how it could survive on other planets, scientists say.
Researchers have found millions of "super" bacteria thriving inside the oxygen-starved Lake Diamante, in the center of a giant volcanic crater located over 4,700 meters above sea level. The bacteria's habitat is similar to primitive earth, before living and breathing organisms began wrapping a protective atmosphere of oxygen around the planet. The conditions - which include high arsenic(砒霜的) and alkaline(碱性的) levels - could also shed light on life beyond Earth.
"This is of great scientific interest as a window to look to our past and also for a science called astrobiology, the study of life on other planets," said Maria Eugenia Farias, part of the team that discovered the life-forms in Lake Diamante earlier this year. If bacteria can survive here, the theory goes, it could also survive elsewhere like Mars.
But Farias said these bacteria, called "polyextremophiles" are exceptional because they flourish in the harshest of circumstances. "What we have here is a series of extreme conditions all in one place. And this is what makes this place unique in the world," said Farias, a microbiologist at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council in Argentina's Tucuman Province.
The bacteria's DNA mutates to survive the ultraviolet(紫外线的) radiation and low oxygen levels found at such high altitudes, which could make it of interest to the pharmaceuticals industry, Farias said. It could also have future commercial applications in products such as sunscreens, she added.
Farias and her team are looking for Argentine funding to produce a metagenome(宏基因组) of the bacteria. This would enable her crew to study the bacteria in Argentina and help ensure the South American country keeps hold of potentially lucrative patents for new antioxidants or enzymes that could be derived from the bacteria.
67. The “super” bacteria take the name from the fact that ______.
 A. they survive where the toughest conditions combine

 C. they are resistant to any prescription drugs
 D. they survive somewhere such as Mars

69. Farias’ team hopes to further their research with the purpose of            .

As there are plenty of great poems websites, it’s necessary for us to learn the basic skills of appreciating poems as well as dip into the characters of them. We can also explore them from different layers, which gives us different shocks to heart and relaxes us with its beauty.
Meanwhile, we can develop a good aesthetic taste and improve our language skills in our approach to appreciating the poems. As a result, not only can it broaden our horizons but also we can strengthen our interest in English.
For us students, why not organize a literary association and create poems of our own? We can exchange good works there as well as good friendship.
Don’t you think it’s a great idea?
                                                 Yours,
                                                 Wang Li
