阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon; on foot, on mules(骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early; my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.

As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed, As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat seemed to roast(烘烤) us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.

The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon – by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.

We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAKE US BACK!” When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.

People can get sick if they eat food that has been in contact with floodwater. Floodwater may contain human and animal wastes, and other pollutants like agricultural and industrial chemicals. After a flood, throw away anything not stored in a waterproof (防水的) container if there has been a chance of contact. This is the advice of food specialists at the United States Agriculture Department.

Throw away anything in soft packaging, and not to save plastic bags of food even if boxes and containers inside the bags appear dry. Also, do not eat fresh produce from the garden if it has come in contact with floodwater.

Throw away boxes of juice and milk if they have come into contact with floodwater, and also throw away damaged metal cans or hard plastic containers. Glass jars and bottles of home-canned foods should be thrown out as well. The containers cannot be effectively cleaned after a flood, but some unopened, undamaged all-metal cans can be saved. First, remove any labels, as they may contain dirt and germs from the floodwater. Wash the cans with soap and water, and brush or wipe away dirt. Use hot water and water that is safe for drinking if it is available. Next, place the cans again in water and heat the water to one hundred degrees Celsius. Boil the cans for two minutes.

Once cans are clean, let them air-dry for at least one hour before opening or storing them. Relabeled them with a marking pen to list their contents and any dates when they are best used by.

Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.

Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change.

Jacob Riis was among the first photojournalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(贫穷) caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine’s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children.

Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture.

As historical and artistic documents(文献) ,photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish(发表) them in books and on the Internet.

44. The underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refers to         .

A. beauties       B. photos      C. goods       D. events

45. The photos of the small children by Hine show us that photos            .

A. are also works of art         B. are popular ways of reporting news

C. often shock the public        D. can serve as a force for social change

46. What can we learn from the passage?

A. News with pictures is encouraging.       B. Photos help people improve

C. News photos mean history in a sense.     D. People prefer reading news with pictures.

47. The text is mainly about       .

A frowning face is not what most electricity customers expect to see on their utility statements, but Greg Dyer got one. He earned it, the utility said, by using a lot more energy than his neighbors. “I have four daughters; none of my neighbors has that many children,” said Mr. Dyer, a lawyer who lives in Sacramento. He wrote back to the company and gave it his own rating: four frowning faces.

The district had been trying for years to prod customers into using less energy with tactics like rebates(打折扣)for energy-saving appliances. But the traditional approaches were not meeting the energy reduction goals set by the nonprofit utility board.

Last April, it began sending out statements to 35,000 randomly(任意地)selected customers, rating them on their energy use compared with that of neighbors in 100 homes of similar size that used the same heating fuel. The customers were also compared with the 20 neighbors who were especially efficient in saving energy.

Customers who scored high earned two smiley faces on their statements. “Good” conservation got a single smiley face. Customers like Mr. Dyer, whose energy use put him in the “below average” category, got frowns, but the utility stopped using them after a few customers got upset. When the Sacramento utility conducted its first assessment of the program after six months, it found that customers who received the personalized report reduced energy use by 2 percent more than those who got standard statements.

The approach has now been picked up by utilities in 10 major urban areas eager to reap(获得)rewards through increased efficiencies. Following Sacramento’s lead, they award smiley faces only.

48. People received frowning faces because ____.

A. they had difficulty in reducing their energy use

B. they spent less buying energy-saving electrical equipment

C. they consumed more energy than their neighbors

D. they behaved badly in energy-saving movements

49. What does the underlined word “prod” in the second paragraph mean?

A. Encourage.   B. Convince.     C. Advise.      D. Praise.

50. According to the text, the approach to saving energy ____.

A. has proved effective

B. has been welcomed by housewives

C. has become more widespread in European countries

D. has had no effect on reducing energy use

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

We talked last week about employment rules for international students in the United States.51          American schools provided aid to almost half of foreign graduate students during the last academic year, but only ten percent of undergraduates.

52      A small number of students receive support from the United States government. Employers, private sponsors and international organizations also help some students pay for school. A list of American colleges and universities that offer financial aid to foreign students can be found at edupass.org.     53      Never trust a program that charges for application forms.

54      The Institute of International Education in New York says thirty-one percent during the last academic year were undergraduates. The others were studying English or in training program. In all, the United States has around eighteen million students in higher education. Last year, more than six hundred twenty thousand, or three and a half percent, were international students.

The United States, though, has the largest “market share”, about twenty percent of all the international students in the world. But even as more and more students come to the United States, more and more are also going to other countries. So experts say the American share is likely to go down in the future.      55      Other top countries for international students include France, Germany, Australia, China, Canada and Japan.

A. Some students are supported by their home university or government.

B. About half of international students are in graduate school.

C. There is very little financial aid for foreign nationals to study in the US, with the possible exception of citizens of Canada and Mexico.

D. The web site also provides information and advice on scholarship programs.

E. The nearest competitor is Britain, with thirteen percent at last report.

F. Twenty-six percent were supported by their American college or university.

G. Now we move to financial aid, which is often limited for international students.
