I heard the merry grasshopper then sing.
The black-cladcricket bear a second part;
They kept one tune and played on the same string,
Seeming to glory in their little art.
Shall creatures abject thus their voices raise
And in their kind resound their Maker’s praise,
Whilst I, as mute, can warble forth no higher lays?
我听见快乐的蚱蜢在歌唱,
穿黑衣的蟋蟀紧接着吟诵;
他们保持一致音调反复唱,
好似为这小艺术感到光荣。
这也许是生命所能唱出的最小音符,
但他们如此虔诚地反复歌颂造物主,
我若沉默,更美的颤音又怎能唱出?
