Para 7 The son told him all the troubles straight away, from beginning to end. The old man thought for a little and then he said: Don't tell anybody anything for the time being. But when the last patches of snow melt on the fields, take your plough and go and plough up the lane in front of your house. Rake it over after that and ... stop worrying."
儿子毫不犹豫地把所有的困难的来龙去脉告诉了父亲。老人想了一会儿,然后说:"目前什么事都不要对别人说。但是当最后几块雪融化在地里的时候,带上犁去耕咱们房前的小路。用耙子耙平,事后不要担心。"
 
[summary] The father gave his son some advice after understanding the troubles.
 
1. The son told him all the troubles straight away, from beginning to end.
 
straight away: equivalent to right away / off, without hesitation or delay 毫不犹豫地,毫不耽搁地
I told her straight away / off what I thought of her.
[idioms]
get sth. straight / right: understand sth. clearly, without error 清楚无误地了解某事物
put sb. straight about sth.:
(on) the straight and narrow: belowing or living
honesttly,not as a criminal 循规蹈矩,老老实实地做人
correct sb's mistake; make sure that sb. knows the correct facts, etc. 纠正某人的错误,务必使某人了解事实等。
Let's get this right once and for all.
The teacher often puts Mary straight about writing.
He finds it difficult to stay on / stick to the straight and narrow for long.
 
2. Don't tell anybody anything for the time being.
 

for the time being: at present, for a time
You'll have your own office soon but for the time being you'll have to share one.

 
3. ...take your plough and go and plough up the lane in front of your house.
 

in front of : in a position directly before
in the front of : in a position that is to the front of certain domain
He was standing in front of me when it happened.
He is sitting in the front of the car with the driver.

 
4. Rake it over after that and ... stop worrying.
 

[paraphrase] Go over it with a rake and don't worry.

rake: v. to use a rake on sth.用耙子耙某物
I was busy raking the soil.

rake over old ashes: to revive (usu. unpleasant) memories of the past

When he was in trouble, the old man would rake over old ashes.

Para 8 The boy followed the advice the old man had given him and what did he see? There came a quick spring rain and out of the ground there began to sprout wheat and maize, oats and barley and even beans and peas in some places.
It seemed so wonderful that news of it spread up and down the country. It was a thing no one had ever heard of ---a man's reaping where he hadn't sown.
儿子遵循父亲的教导,他看到了什么?一场春雨扭转了困境。地里开始长出小麦、玉米、燕麦和大麦,一些地方甚至出现了豆荚和豌豆。 这简直太神奇了,消息迅速传遍了全国。这是人们前所未闻的事情-没有播种便可以收获。
 
[summary] A piece of good news appeared and spread all over the country.
 
There came a quick spring rain and out of the ground there began to sprout wheat and maize, oats and barley and even beans and peas in some places.
 
sprout: v. to begin to grow or appear; put on leaves, shoots, etc.to develop or produce sth.
The onions are beginning to sprout up.
Tom has sprouted a beard since we saw him last.

names of cereal:谷物的名称
wheat 小麦    maize(corn)玉米
oats 燕麦     barley 大麦
rye 黑麦                millet 粟,小米
rice 稻子              sorghum 高粱

bean: pod containing smooth, usu kidney-shaped seeds, which is itself eaten as a vegetable 豆荚

pea: climbing plant with long green pods containing edible green seeds that are eaten as a vegetable 豌豆

Para 9 Of course the king got to hear of it too. He quickly ordered the lad to be brought before him. So he presented himself and of course he was now considered to be the wisest of the wise.
"What did you do? How did you do it? Who told you what to do? The king started asking him questions at once. All these questions confused the boy and he was afraid so he didn't tell him the true answer straight off. But in the end he admitted what had happened.
当然国王也有所耳闻。他立即下命令把那小伙带来。他来了,理所当然地被称为智者之王。
"你做了些什么?怎么做的?谁告诉你的?" 国王马上开始问他问题。这些问题难住了小伙。由于害怕,他没有直接说出真相。但是最后他供出了其中原委。
 
[summary] The news was heard by the king and the boy admitted the story.
 
1. Of course the king got to hear of it too.
 
[paraphrase] Certainly the king heard of it after a time.

get to do sth.: do sth. step by step 逐渐做某事
I got to understand him during the following days with him.
[idiom] get to doing sth.: reach the point where one does sth., begin to do sth. 开始或着手做某事
He got to thinking that she perhaps wouldn't come after all.

 
2. So he presented himself and of course he was now considered to be the wisest of the wise.
 

present oneself ( for sth.): (of a person) appear or attend (指人)出现,出席
You will be asked to present yourself for interview.
[idiom] present itself to sb.: (of an opportunity, a solution, etc) show itself (to sb.), occur (指机会、解决办法等)(对某人)显露,产生
The answer presented itself to him when he looked at the problem again.
